I was going though some old American Survival Guides and found ads for the Hunter Honer. It is a small orange handdle that holds 2 pieces of sharpening media in an "X" shape at about 20-30 degree angle. They say that this will get knives really sharp with out a bunch of work. Anyone use one?

I have a Soingen made one made from black plastic. The sharpening media consists of 2 pieces of hardened steel that looks like miniature chef's steels. The Angle is set, and all of my knives benefit from just a couple of passes, particulary my 440V Military and my M2 Benchmade. I know Cliff is a beliver in steeling (Burnishing?) a blade as you use it to keep the edge aligned and prevent rolling. This does the job, wieghs about an ounce, and cost me about $6.00US.

I hate those things. You're stuck with the angle the manufacturer decided you want, and it's much blunter than I ever want. YMMV.

The ones I have seen and have do not 'steel' the edge. They gouge the edge. They create a very fast, very toothy edge that will last a decent while for the time it took to make. They will tear through whatever you cut, be this good or bad. If you are in some kind of speed competition, they might be worth it.

The Hunter Honer was the first knife sharpener I ever bought! I too read about it in ASG.

TERRIBLE!! You're better off not sharpening at all than to use one of those rotten things.

I now have a Gatco sharpening system, similar to the Lansky. All of my knives are well again.
