This one has a 4" file worked blade forged from 1084 with a hand rubbed finish, fittings are Nickel Silver. The handle spacer is California Bucky and
polished Antler that has been sealed with super glue. And yes I do make little knives once in a while. Tell me what you think. Gib

Nice ,all you need for a hunter, though notches and holes in blades make me nervous. What is california Bucky ?

Jeff, Just a question dose the sheath look look I made it or Chuck? If you can't tell then D!!m I am getting good.

Mete, All I know is that it is a Burl that grows on a tree in California, I heard that it is a maple but I don't know for sure. In color it will range from light brown to dark gray. Maybe some one that knows what thy are talking about will tell us what it is. Gib

Gib, You posting two knives so soon that it had me confused thinking this was the other one except the other was a crown, right? One thing about the small knives at least for me they sure sell quicker. Nice work as usual! I've been working on a couple hawks while working on this shop project. I'm so tired of this project. I just want to make knives and hawks.....

Ray, Yes the other one had a crown stick handle. It was a tiny sambar stick that I had forgotten that I had, so I decided to use them I have quite a few so there will be more knives. As far as selling a small knife thy don't work well for me. I can't keep a big Bowie around the little ones just don't sell. And if thy don't sell I will have quite a collection of my own work, Thy won't given away like in the past. these three went to the truck stop.
Gib

FYI ya'll - The wood is California Buckeye burl -
California buckeye, Aesculus californica

Higgy - you shouldn't even have to ask - I haven't made a plain sheath in at least three years - don't get me wrong - nothing wrong with "plain" mind you but I just don't do them anymore - not enough of the long green! :D  :D

....though notches and holes in blades make me nervous
The so called Spanish notch which is a "minimalist" hold over from the Spanish/Italian sword breaker fencing knives has been around since the 16th/17th century or so and file work has been used for a couple thousand of years at least - in my experience if a knife is used for a knife and not a pry bar or some such it ain't gonna break just because of those items - well if it's built right in the first place anyway. Always noted that those deep plunge cuts so many are fond of don't seem to scare folks much. (BTW - I grew up with a Dad - God rest his soul - who was master machinist/tool maker/aerospace engineer - and I learned at the age of 6 or 7 about such things...Been building knives with such things since 1973 and so far no returns - which is not a perfect score since some may have broken and I never heard, but so far.....)

Of course your mileage may vary.....

Mete, why does it make you nervous? I'm guessing you might say that it could have possible adverse effects during the heat treat cycle? Thanks :)

In tests like the Charpy V notch impact test they notch it to make it much easier to break. The hole at the end of Gib's notch does improve things though.
