This is a little hunter's bowie that I just finished. It has a 5" blade forged from 1084 with a damascus guard and spacer. The handle is made from an ash hammer handle I found at Lowe's. It will be heading with me to the Knifemaker's Guild Show in Orlando in a couple of weeks.

Very nice, sir:thumbup: I like making those 5-6 inch bowies too.

Nice simple clean design. I like it.

Nice work.

Kind regards,

Jos

Nice clean, functional design with excellent execution. The size looks perfect and the wood on the handle looks great.

When I was doing woodworking a friend of mine who specialized in Shaker-style pieces told me that the simpler designs were the hardest to do because there wasn't any fancy stuff to keep people from noticing the mistakes. That's the way I feel about this kind of knife. I realize that the good makers consistently turn out darn near flawless knives, but this type of design puts 100% of the focus on the maker's skills whereas the beautiful, highly ornate knives that you know took a huge amount of skill to make give you more things to focus on. I like them all, but the simple, superbly executed knives are the ones that appeal to me the most.

I really appreciate the comments. As a maker a part of me hates to see any knife sell, but that is what they are made for. This one will be different. I want to keep one of the knives I take to Orlando and this will be it. I grew up in the 50's using a 5" hunter's Bowie by Imperial (I'm being real generous here with that description. They cost less than a buck back then.) and have wanted to make one similar to it as a keeper for some time. I just could not go with the black plastic handle and decided to dress it up a little. I am glad you liked it. This one will see some hard use.
