Hunting and Butchering with Beckers.

As some of you may know, Amanda and I both got a deer this season. They are not monsters but they were great first deer and will be enjoyed for many meals to come. It was a humbling experience for the both of us that we will not forget.

Of course Beckers were used for the field dressing and butchering, as well as one custom Ulu by Jim Bensinger.

I used a BK-14 for the field dressing. Battoned a BK-2 to separate the rib cages. A BK-5 and a BK-15 to help quarter the deer. The BK-5 is one hell of a blade and it made it easy to remove the shoulders in pretty much one smooth cut around the shoulder. I haven't used the BK-5 much but after using it in a butchering role I can see that I need a few more 5s in my collection.

The surprise star would have to go to the Ulu made by Jim Bensinger. Sorry fellow Beckerheads, that ulu was invaluable during the entire process.

Here are some pictures. I didn't get a lot since there was a lot of work to be done and our hands were messy and slippery through most of the work.

Speaking of messy and slippery hands. This process was a great test for the Grivory and Zytel handles. The knives never slipped out of our hands or became a danger at anytime. Due to their shape the handles allowed us to work and not have to think about the knife.

I wish I had taken more pictures and video of the BK-5 in the butchering process. It is one hell of a blade.

Feel free to post your pictures of hunting and butchering with Beckers.

Be safe and have fun.

Hey.....I thought that ulu was supposed to be a gardening blade! Happy to hear that your first deer season turned out so well. I'm impressed how you guys both just went for it. I'm still shooting my bow and thinking about it.....how are you going to store the venison? Do you have a separate freezer? Couple hundred pounds of deer would present a challenge at my house. Don't have the fridge space.
Congrats to the both of you.

Congrats guys!

Reading your post made me hungry. That Ulu looks pretty awesome!

Congrats to the both of you.

It's likely less than half of that weight in meat. They probably got 40-50lbs of meat per deer. Bones, hide, head, scrap, and antler(s) weigh a lot and add up fast. Still enough that it probably wouldn't fit in the freezer in the fridge though.

Nice job on the deer. I hope to be doing the same soon.

Congrats.

The 14 is a great size and shape for field dressing, the 5 makes short work of just about anything involving slicing (butchering certainly included) and the 15, well, at least IMHO, there's not much that the 15 can't do - it punches above it's weight.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent pics. Surprising how good the little blade is. Awesome seeing the BK's in the field.

Hey Dresnor....

I am so happy that you and Amanda both scored.....Yay.. Whoot, whoot..... Glad the Becker Blades made life a little easier for you....... Good to see Becker scored too......

All best....

E

That is one hell of an ulu!......

I did not take any pictures unfortunately, but I field dressed a 6 point 125lb whitetail last week with a BK2! Worked surprisingly well for such a big blade. Went through the rib cage and pelvis like no other blade I have ever had. I know a BK2 for field dressing is overkill, but I wanted to see how it worked! I would not skin with such a large blade unless I had nothing else, but for field dressing, worked well!!!

Nice work! I use my Beckers all the time in the field and for cleanup at home. BK16 has gotten plenty of cleaning action and just to say I've done it, so have the BK2 and BK9 (BK9 works better on squirrels than I'd ever have thought). The one I use most though, hands down is my trusty and ever present BK11. Helped butcher a deer with it not that long ago and its seen tons of action on fish, squirrels, etc.

Beckers FTW! :D

Not EXACTLY butchering, but my 24 has breasted many a duck in the past few years. Pretty handy around the blind too.

Last night I had conveniently just finished sharpening my 15 when a friend of ours said someone down the road hit a deer! The 15 did most of the work, although it was paired with an Izula 2
I don't have any pictures of the skinning, it was raining pretty hard and was too wet to work my phone, but the 15 performed phenomenally. Zipped right through like it was nothing, I like how it has a nice pointy tip to pierce easily.

After all this the Bk-15 could still shave, it was a little rough though. A quick visit with the strop and she's like a razor again. I was very pleased with the performance, handled every task with ease. I should be able to update this with the actual processing of the deer a little later. Here she is making new friends

The deer I processed with the BK7. Sorry there are no processing pics. I was on my own and bloody to my wrists. Anyway, all duties from field dressing to butchering were done with the mighty 7!

Neat thread. Thanks for sharing. Now, I need to get my self in the woods and get one!

I wish I had a "garage" like that one. Anyway, I enjoyed the reading and pics.
