Hunting Boar In Poland

Here is a nice little hunting story that I just had to share.

My Project II was overhauled last year having been retired from military service, and just hadn't had a good outing since it came back looking like new. So I took it to Poland for a wild boar shoot having been invited by some Belgium friends and been told that Polish wild boar are well hard and like to fight back.

First day, third drive, I heard a huge hollaring of dogs. There, in the drive (the drive is where the beaters and dogs are, and they drive the boars out past the the guns where a safe shot can be taken) was a good sized wounded boar with tree dogs attached coming my way. The boar had been wounded and run back into the drive with the pack of dogs onto it.

Now, the cry went up "shoot it, shoot it" from the beaters. This is the time when their dogs can get over enthusiastic and end up goared to death. A good twenty five meters away from my peg the boar stopped to fight. I was in the hot seat. I checked I could make a safe shot into the drive. Fortunately the dogs backed off to the rear of the beast and I took a shot and connected just as one dog dived in again. Bugger me if the boar didn't just shake it head and start moving off again  At least I hadn't chalked up a dog as my first trophy in Poland :o Wow these boars are tough!

The boar didn't go far, a few yards, but still needed finishing. The dogs were all over it and one of the beaters went in, but on getting his hunting knife out realised it was just too small  Having made safe my double rifle, I was able to pass over my Project to get the job done right.

My shot had been good, but posible because of the dog moving forward, it had hit the rear of the jaw and just wasn't instantly fatal enough. So it was Project one, me non - well not until the next day and I sure wasn't going to let any boar another chance to test my Project's metal. ;)
