Hey all,

I would like to pick up a decent hunting/camping knife that I can use for hog and deer hunting, skinning and camp use. Naturally I would love to have a custom one made, but right now I can't spare the extra money for that.

I would like something with a blade of 4 to 6 inches or so that will hold an edge and not be too darn hard to resharpen if I need to.

Here are some of the ones I have been considering so you can kind of get an idea of my thoughts and price range.

Cold Steel SRK
Kabar USMC
Kabar USMC Short Style 5"
Kabar Bull Dozier
Buck Ergo Hunter
Buck Special
Buck Vanguard
Some of the Cheapo Cold Steel Knives

Those are just some of them. I can't list all that I have looked at.

I can't spend over $70 or so.

What knife would you suggest I take a look at or what would you recommend I use? Also I am in South Florida so blade finish and resistance is also important to me.

Thanks for your help and time.

In that price range I really like the baby K-Bar. That is my goto catfish knife. I wouldn't want to baton with it, but it hasn't let me down.

I picked up the Ergohunter Pro not too long ago. Kinda neat having the gut hook tool separate from the knife. I like it, but will put it to the test this fall. The pro exceeds the $70 mark, I think the standard version is somewhere in that range.

get a kabar fixed blade.
great quality with low price.
even if it breaks you won't cry.
that's not a lie.
you should give it a try!

Get the Kabar Becker Bk7/bk11 kit for around 60 dollars. That gives you one helluva rough use camping knife and a nice smaller backup for things like skinning.

Blackfeet, I have been looking at that one but didn't list it cause I already listed a bunch of knives. It does look good and would prolly do just fine.

I haven't been able to find that combo you list, the BK7/BK11. I can find them seperately, but not as a kit.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Buck Vanguard looks like a great hunting knife. Looks perfect for gutting/skinning deer and large game.

Another shot for the BK7. Good durability and cutting ability in a fairly light package for the size. Excellent edge retention and sharpenability. Great blade for a fair price.

I'll get my bongo's! :)

I concur though. On my last 3 day camping trip the fixed blade tanto K-Bar was the most used knife. The only thing we used more was the axe, because we chopped down a TON of dead trees to make a bonfire.

The one's I have experience with are the CS Master Hunter and Buck Vanguard. Both are great hunting knives. As Camp Knives they are a little short on blade length. I used to use a short machete or an Old Hickory as my camp knife. It did everything from split kindling to digging the honey trench.

Take a look at the "Nighthawk" line from Buck. Tough inexpensive and comfortable knives. 420HC blades and sharp as heck. Just a thought...

If you are going to use the knife for working on game, I would keep the size down a little, even though it may not work as well for heavy chopping....

Its a personal preference though, because there are people who use big knives for everything.

You might take a look at Cold Steel Pendleton hunter. There are two different sizes, I would look at the large one. IIRC they can be had for around 45-50 bucks. There are a lot of different knives that will fill your needs

Buck Vanguard is a good choice and the 4 1/4" blade is about all you need for a hunting/camp knife. Get the rubber handled version though, you'll have a better grip then the wood model and it's usually cheaper. Need something to split or chop wood then get a axe.
