Hunting for my First Case

The hunter is the biggest knife on the lower left. And it’s huge? Like Buck 110 huge? Everything checked out and they will knock off 10% lol. Floyde the old feller, bless his heart, had to get almost every case knife out was super.
Picture only shows about half of the knives.

That folding hunter looks great. :)

In answer to your question … No. It is not the same size as a Buck 110.
A buck 110 is 5 inches closed.

The classic 2 blade folding hunters like that are 5.5 inches closed.

A full half inch bigger than a Buck 110. :)

(They do carry just as nicely as the 110 when you use a belt sheath. I have a Marbles MR417 2 blade folding hunter (5.5 inches closed) on my belt (at least until February) as I type this.)

Of the knives I see in the picture, that 2 blade folding hunter would be my first pick, followed closely by the Toenail/Sunfish/Whaler/several other names. Third would be that Scout knife.
What can I say? I like the larger knives. :)
(No. Not to "Compensate" for anything.)

EDIT: That old Remington Trapper for $28 is a "steal". I think I would jump on it, too, if I had the funds.

My favorites from the photo

$32 case mini-trapper 6-dot seems like a good price if the blades are full
$45 case Stockman maybe a little high, but I like the bone handles.
$53 8-dot copperhead. I wouldn't be a buyer here, but I like the pattern. I'd probably buy the stag Hen & Rooster before this.

The 2 blade hunter is a tank of a knife. Not something I would carry.
The sunfish is more rare, but not my cup of tea.
If you like the trapper, check the full size trapper in the upper right of the photo with jigged bone. Under $40 would be a good price. Or one of the smaller trappers in the top middle.

Yes I remember toenail and Whaler was what he said. Why elephant got in there that’s just my ignorance and hearing comprehension kicking in.
I meant big like a 110 as in i am looking for a case pocket knife and the hunter is too big. Like i would never carry a Buck 110 in my pocket. But i do like it and you never know it may be my first Case knife. Would have to get a sheath for it.

Nice collection that fella has....is this an antique shop?

Prices are fair....I like that congress but by the looks of the main blade, it had a date with a buffing wheel some time in the past.

I looked at that trapper (greenish looking jig bone) upper right. It wasn’t too expensive and i think the blades were good. Will be going back. The old couple are nice and i will be giving them some business. The booth is owned by a third party so they can only deal down so far.

Interesting i would not have known that. Is that what created that pattern?

Afishunter i saw your edit. No idea how to date that Remington. Or if they are valuable? Or rare. This whole collecting knives thing im ramping up has the opportunity to get out of hand......

You're fortunate that you can handle the knives before you buy. A few finer points I look for are good firm snap when you close the blades - not all blades will close with the same force (a mushy or weak snap is akin to a limp wristed handshake); and secondly, make sure the blades center when closed and don't wander to one side or the other close to the brass liner - thats just aesthetic really, but well centered blades are a symbol of quality (to me). The longer I'm into this knife collecting foolishness, the more function (good snap, centered blades, no lateral wobble when open, etc) becomes more important than appearance ... some of my best functioning knives are plain old dark brown / red bone '70's Cases.

I'd go for that black G-10 sided mini-trapper in the upper middle - love that G10 material & Case only used it for a few years - it's lightweight, very tough, looks like carbon fiber and has the "as ground" matte blades that intentionally show the tooling marks - I really like the look of the as ground blades.

Here's a full size trapper with G10 sides ...

I think the only way is by the tang stamp. I found one online, but I do not recall enough of it to give a date on that one.
while the "Bullet Knives" are no doubt rarer and more highly sought (and thus correspondingly more pricy) I don't think the "regular production" models are all that common these days, either.
That one looks to be in good condition. Even though the Trapper is not my "favorite" pattern, I would seriously consider getting it for my (growing?!?!? how the heck did that happen?!?) collection of "user" Trappers.
