Thought I'd do a post and include what I carry for a day in the woods! Feel free to comment, criticize and let me know what you think. It includes everything I need to find, bag and butcher game and nothing that I don't.

CLOTHING
Polartec Jacket
Warm Hat
Fingerless Ragg Gloves

BUTCHERING/KNIVES
2 6' pieces of 550 cord
2 pillow cases
trash bag
skinning knife (Bark River Woodland Special or Spyderco Tenacious)
machete (12" heavy Ontario)
small diamond sharpener

HUNTING ACCESORIES
8x binoculars
Rifle/Ammo/Sling/Barrel Tape (Winchester94 30-30)

MISC
Camera (fresh batteries, empty memory card)
Headlamp (fresh batteries)

FIRST AID/SURVIVAL
Space Blanket
Firesteel
iodine pills
Bic lighter
Firestarter (Fire straws)
extra flashlight (1AAA Maglite)

Immodium
Antihistamines
Butterflies
gauze pads
ankle wrap/pressure wrap
few bandaids
micropore tape

Hypothermia is my biggest fear out, you need something to cook in.
small steel cup or billie to keep the first aid/survival gear
old international coffee tin's are great and has a lid. You can cook and eat out of them,
doing that for 35yrs since cubs.
big chocolate bar(double snickers) ,boullion cubes/pkg of lipton soup and a pack of jerky will get you through the night. I always have a light teaspoon in all my packs, love soup and having malleable steel is handy.
If you carry water in a steel bottle you can skip the tin, or use it as a bowl but it keeps things organized.
Water filter straw
2 large garbage bags. One to fill with debris for a mattress and one for roof/shelter, you have the space blanket
I would also add a small folding saw it makes bone/wood work easy as well as a couple pairs of rubber gloves for butchering and first aid.
FOX 40 whistle !!!!!

yeah I know It is a lot of stuff Codger64 but my pack with survival gear, binoc's and 3 litres of water is 20lb not bad for the security and safety. I would have everything but the machete(folding saw instead)
Woods and Mountains here are thick steep and can weather change by 10 celcius in 20 minutes. I have had fog or snow roll in so thick it would not matter if you were 1.2miles from the road.
No treestand hunting around here, gotta crash bush before light then move and slow stalk/ stake out the meadows and clearings/trails.

Where are you located? That sounds to me like a huge overload for a dayhunt. But I am in the mid-South and my hunting grounds aren't a dozen miles from the nearest road. If I were in the Great White North, I might feel otherwise.

IIRC, you are in Hawaii. Is your Polartec jacket waterproof? If not, a lightweight poncho or rain shell might be nice to keep you from soaking through.

I like to bushwack when I spot and stalk, so always have a good compass and topo map.

Maybe some fatwood or valseline soaked cotton balls.

Looks like you have all your bases covererd.

I'm like a few guys here, I just carry rifle, extra rounds, skinning knife, water and some trail mix. I'm in central GA and don't really go too far in the woods, so I don't need too much.

I'm in Hawaii. So weather below freezing isn't expected. However last weekend where I hunted there was frost on the ground until 10am so it does get pretty chilly. I do carry a goretex paclite jacket, but forgot to list it. I like that the few things I spaced are the same things you guys recommend. I always have a compass as well in my vest pocket.

All you guys that carry a knife and water only. You must not be staying out very long, or hiking very far. Or you're just maniacs ;)

My dayhunts are usually from daybreak until 4-5 pm, sometimes until dark. And can take me from 6 to as much as 15 miles.

The list looks pretty good...if you're carrying a Nalgene, I would add a nesting cup as it is pretty space-efficient.

Not sure how thick of vegetation you hunt in, but I like a pair of leather gloves for bushwhacking if your game bleeds out in thick stuff.

Just curious as to the two pillow cases? I would think they absorb water/blood and add a lot of weight if your packing the kill into them...???

A small bottle of hand-sanitizer if you plan to make a quick snack after you dress the game.

Don't forget a little TP if that urge hits:D

Lastly, I'm not sure what your using to pack everything, but I've been wearing my RIBZ Front Pack, which really wears more like a short vest. I don't pack a lot, but enough of the essentials including a small siltarp to serve as a more effective and robust shelter than a trash bag.

So you're......you're.....naked from the waist down?!?!

I like the kit. Straightforward and to the point. Like others mentioned, I'd throw in a couple of heavy duty garbage bags to assist in making a shelter if need be. Also, as well as a whistle, a signal mirror. The flashlight would work well for signalling at night, but during the day it wouldn't be visible.

I bring some forearm length dishwashing gloves to keep my hands free of blood and guts. Partly for ease of cleanup and partly to reduce the chance of any disease transmission.

I also carry a small foam pad. Keeps your backside from getting cold and wet when you are sitting somewhere ambush hunting and it keeps your knees in better shape when field dressing on rocky ground.

Maybe you need less "kit" and more "kilt":D...couldn't help myself:p

The small pad is a great idea...I always have a small piece I take backpacking, never thought about hunting...pure genius:thumbup:

I'm down south myself, but if you take away the hunting specific items I carry that much, or more, in my daypack ever time I head into the woods. I'm a big proponent of the "Ten Essentials" and always carry my own version with me when hiking out of sight of the trailhead.
