Been looking for general big game hunting knife and, since I have some unused Cabela's gift certificates, have narrowed it down to two that they carry: the Knives of Alaska Hunter Series in D2 or the Cabelas Alaskan Guide Buck Vanguard in S30V. Any input appreciated.

I've heard really good things about the KoA Hunter series. My brother in law (living in Alaska) uses his carries one when hunting for bear, moose, and sheep.

That's a tough choice. I would go with the AG Vanguard. Great steel with a very good grind, and they heat treat is good.

The only KoA knife I own is a Magnum Ulu in D2, kind of specialized, but the edge is impressively sharp.

The Buck Vanguard seems like a signature model. They've been turning out that design with a variety of blade steels and handle materials, so it's also a good bet, especially in S30V.

I have no experience with KOA and they might be great, but I can tell you imo Cabela's AG Vanguard would be an excellent choice.

Thanks for all the input. Now hearing the KoA Hunter series is being discontinued and will be replaced soon.
