My nephew is getting to start bow hunting this year. I'm considering buying him his first hunting knife for Christmas. Came across a Mentor and looked like a decent little knife with a nice rubber grip. Any suggestions? When my daughter started hunting I bought her a small queen similar in size to a woodsman just a little smaller.

Actually its a mini mentor I came across. 3 1/2 inche blade.

I pick up a LNIB Scrade Old Timer for my son at an auction a few years back. He was thrilled with it and it was wicked sharp then and is now. I think I picked it up for $20.

I wouldnt mind even finding an older Schrade. My only thing is I want the knife I buy him to be U.S made.

The mini will work well,or you can get a mini Alpha in several handle variations.
The Alpha has a wider blade and more money. You can go on the Buck web site above, look under hunting knives.

I'm getting my daughter a folding Omni Hunter 10 Pt.

3" blade, dual thumb studs, rubber handle, nylon sheath, your choice of colors, US-made, around $30

Check it out; mine really holds a nice edge and holds up very nicely for deer.

I may have to check that out. I may wait and see if Walmart gets any gift tins of 110 or 112s this year. Everyone needs one or the other. Lots of good choices out there.

A Buck 110. If fixed I'd look at the AG Russell Deer Hunter (4" blade) or Bird and Trout (3" blade). AUS8 is a fine steel. My AUS8 AG Featherlite had been great.

If going classic I would suggest a KA-BAR stacked leather hunter. I have the little finn and it is great.

The first fixed blade I ever owned in the 60's, was a 4" KA-BAR Hunter. A fine knife. Much like Evil Eye Earl, I am partial to any of the Buck Alphas. A mini would make a good first knife.

Consider the Buck Omni Hunters too. The 10PT would be a good option I think.

I always suggest first, asking the kid what he/she would like. Remember that they will grow larger so buy accordingly. A 102 or mini mentor now, may not fit in a year or two years.

We can suggest all day long, but if he doesn't like what you pick out, it will just get buried in a drawer.

Another idea is to look for a blade with his birth year tang stamp. That will mean a lot to him. My grandson just loves the - (1992) 112 I gave him for Christmas last. This year he gets one of the more rare double dash 110's

Now, there is a mintor/minimentor set that you might look for. I have been using the larger mentor knives ever since they came out. Mom loves them in her kitchen drawer, as well as all the kids and grandkids when there is a bunch of cooking going on.

Amazing,,,I just noticed that I had chalked the tang stamps for visibility and they are 1998. You said your nephew is 10?

Yes he is 10. I was really considering a mini-mentor. My only concern with it is no guard. Being his first knife I thought a guard my be a good idea.
