Whats going on gals and guys? My uncle's birthday is coming up real soon and i'd like to get him a hunting/gaming knife. I do not know anything about hunting, skinning game, or which brand is top notch. Would somebody please help? My uncle lives in Alaska and i know for sure he hunts big game. Budget max is $200. I thank everybody for their knowledge and wisdom.;)

Keep an eye in the knife makers market fixed blade for sale forum.

You should find him nice hunting knife at that price with no problem.

Look for something with a sweep in the belly (the part that goes from the blade to the tip) so it will be a good skinner, a drop point, a flat or hollow grind, around 4-5 inches long, and no thicker than 3/16 (1/8th would probably do well).

tried, tested, withstood the test of time. TONS of hunters use them. simple, wont rust easy, stay sharp.

Do you know what kind of knife he carries now? Some people prefer large blades- to pound through rib cages and cut through bones. Some prefer small blades- to deftly cut around bones. Some like large sweeping bellies- so as to not poke through the hide. I prefer a caping knife. I find knives with sweeping (skinner profile) blades and bull noses ungainly to use, especially-and ironically- when skinning game. About the size of a paring knife, and about the same blade profile. Slim and pointy, it can get into the tight spots and make the cuts necessary to free joints. I've never had a problem with it poking through a hide. Pretty much every taxidermist uses a caping knife for skinning, and they skin more animals in a day than any hunter does in a season. But, if your uncle prefers a large blade, he may not appreciate a caping knife for what it is.

Cabelas Alaskan Guide Buck Vangaurd in S30V would be a good blade for your Uncle.

Get him a Knives Of Alaska Magnum Wolverine Hunter. I have had one for years and can not recommend it highly enough!

Order a Gossman he makes nice knives and out of production knives yes Knives of Alaska are great but my Gossman I like better.

I'll second the Dozier. K2, K4, K16 (I think this one is the Yukon Pro) any of his knives are excellent.
