I 'm in the market for a fixed blade hunting and have $50.00 to spend. I really would like a carbon steel blade around 4 inches in length. The knife will be used for deer/turkey hunting, small game, to skin catfish and light camp chores"no chopping" . I woulld like to hear your recommendation.

I've never had one, but a lot of people swear by their Grohmanns. The original design or the bird & trout would probably fit the bill nicely.

I've never handled a Grohmann, but if you up your spending limit by five bucks or so you can get a Bark River Mini Canadian. I have one, and they're built h*ll-for-stout, and come shaving sharp from the factory. And since they're made of A2, they fill your carbon steel requirement.

Certainly the BRK&T products come to mind particularly their Professional line, other options Cold Steel Master Hunter, Benchmade Rant and Gamer.

I have skinned a lot of deer and my nod goes to Bark River. I have a woodland special which is a good size for that task as well as any other chores in the field. Good all around knife and as said before, stout. Thinking about getting a mikro-canadian.

Carbon steel hunters are not too common, unfortunately. Especially at $50 or less.

But, for an extra $5 I think a Master Hunter would fit the bill nicely:

I thought about the Master Hunter vs. the Bark River Mini Canadian or Highland, but I think that the micarta Bark River uses is much more comfortable than Cold Steel's Kraton. I've used both, and that's my experience. Your experience may be different. Carbon V is good steel, and so is A2, so either on would suit your needs.

I've cleaned a lot of salmon with my Buck 119. Filleted a halibut with it Thursday. It has worked real well for me. Stainless blade, not carbon, but it takes a very keen edge and holds it well, easy to touch-up too.

The best deal on the best performing hunting knife is from AG Russell...the knife is the Bark River Woodland Special - $55.00, next size up is the Highland Special - $60.00...

or, if you want a traditional guard take a look at this one for $63...

For more information on Bark River Knives you can visit... www.knifeforums.com
They have their own section there as well as many many posts in the "Outdoors" section.

Yes they are a few $ more than your $50 budget but if you brew your coffee at home for a week instead of getting it from the coffee shop......

Can't go wrong with any of the recommendations. cheaperthandirt.com has the Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V (high carbon steel) for $41 and change, which is a killer price for a knife I've heard many members speak highly of.

Thanks for the replies. I won't order until wendsday morning but right now BRKT is looking good as is the Master Hunter. If anyone else has a suggestion I would love to hear it as well. My mind isn't made up yet. Thanks again.

I'll second the Master Hunter - I didn't recommend it at first because I didn't think you could find one under $50, but since you can, it's a great choice.

How about a Benchmade 190 drop point hunter. It has a 4" blade of 440C steel and you should be able to find one for around $50.00 or $60.00 bucks.
