Dad's birthday is coming up and I would like to get him a new hunting knife. I was going to get him a new Schrade but they are now made in China. Suggestions.

If he likes Schrade, I'm more than sure that you can find an old US made model around.
I can't help you much on that, but surely others will.

I don't hunt, but I've always been attracted to the Buck Woodsman and Pathfinder style knives. Fixed blade sheath knife with black phenolic handles. Very classic designs, very functional for hunting.

Buck do some VERY tidy belt-knives indeed.

Other suggestions: puukko of course! Bark River knives, Hess Knife Works. I did buy a new inexpensive Schrade Sharpfinger made in China, this is no rubbish knife at all I have to tell you.

A little more info would be more helpful. For instance, when I take apart small game I can use a pocket knife or a small sheath knife like a "bird and trout". If he is a larger game hunter that shoots hogs and deer, a larger knife would be better. If he just field dresses game and takes it to processing, something with more point than belly would be better. If he skins it and does minor butchering, more belly would be better than point.

More importantly, what style and blade shape have you seen him use that he likes himself?

There are a lot of really nice hunting knives out there these days and I am sure you can find one he will really like.

... also, what is the budget?

For a full stainless knife, any of the Buck fixed blades are hard to beat, with their superb Bos heat-treated 420HC steel. But for a gift with a little more glamor and edge holding, I suggest the 8⅜" #4190 pattern in D2 from Queen. I picked up this used stag model cheap on line, but the new ones in beautiful burl wood handles are under $60, and the stag new run around $90.

I would probably go with a Queen or Buck in the traditional catagory. I have a Queen with micarta handles (similar to the post above) and it would be a cost effective choice but likely will require sharpening. Mine required significant sharpening which didn't please me for a new knife.

If price is not a significant concern, I recommend a small fixed blade made by Bob Dozier in D2 which can be acquired immediately (normally) from AG Russell.

Lots of good choices made by Bark River.

Please take a look at ruana knives . l bought a 26 for a hunting knife, came sharp, good sheath and carbon steel .

You might want to peruse what's available on the Exchange. There's usually some nice fixed blade knives listed there, by some fine knife makers.

If he likes a beefy knife, the Blackjack 125 (A-2 steel) would be a reasonable choice. For me the blade is a tad long for hunting chores, but great for everything else.

Is this a surprise?

People are funny about knives.. as funny as they are about their shoes, boots, skivies and liquor.

If you are very very sure about his tastes (grind, blade shape, steel) go for it.

Another alternative is to take him to a good store to pick out his new knife. Kills the surprise but he gets to pick it out to suit his tastes.

There are still plenty of the older original Schrade hunting patterns available new in the box, if that is what you think he might like. Otherwise, we have some great custom makers right here on this forum. Here are two custom hunting knives recently made for me, both based upon traditional patterns, but with unique custom features.

I believe that the Bark River Gunny CPM 3V and the new Bark River Bravo LT (also in CPM 3V) are the favorite hunting knives of "virtuovice", one of the biggest skinners on Youtube. They all come in a wide variety of gorgeous handle materials.

Gunny is an excellent choice - not too small for larger game, not too big for small game, and it can even be pressed into service for filleting fish. Worth a look...

I was perusing Bark River knives and noticed the new Nomad. I like it. Ordered one. KSF has quite a selection if you like the design. It is essentially a Backjack 125 made a little smaller. Take a look.

I love my 125's - if you happen to have a 125, please post a comparison pic when you get the Nomad. I have been considering the Nomad as well.
Thanks in advance.
