Well guys its about that time of year, and I'm looking for a new hunting knife! I may or may not get one, but its an excuse to look now isn't it. I'm looking for suggestions, I was really hoping TK had something in the exchange I could jump on, but he doesn't.

So here are my criteria: ~4" blade, ~$200. I'm open on steels, but I'd rather not spend $200 on 1095 if its not a custom from somewhere around here.

I really like the look of clip points, but it'll be a field dressing knife. I've only ever used a drop point to do it, and I'm not sure if a clip is well suited for that work.

Thanks for your input guys! I'll probably post some suggestions of my own here and there in this thread to get feed back on the knives I see as I look.

Sheesh. About a 4" blade, and about $200 or less? Most every knife company in existence makes a knife fitting that description. Many of them make a lot more.

Yes, but not all of those are well suited for field dressing white tail.

I'm currently sifting through bark river's. Might have found one I like

I hunt deer and hogs. I've been wanting to try out the Spyderco Bill Moran upswept point knife in VG-10. It might be a bit shorter than you like, but VG-10 has worked for me in the field very well (Fallkniven F2, Al Mar). I also like Knives of Alaska, their D2 stays sharp for a long time in the field without touching up. I just got a Spyderco Phil Wilson Southfork. This is the best knife I have. It is fantastic in S90V, but a little larger than you're looking for and over $200. Bark River will be next on my list, maybe a NorthStar or Aurora. I use a Benchmade 710 when I need to go light. The blade shape is almost perfect for all around field tasks. I tend to like narrower blades for field dressing and caping. I don't like to have to resharpen or touch up my knives in the back country or during skinning, so "stays sharp" steel is important. Boar hogs are brutal on blades.

Digging through the massive Barkie inventory, I found myself looking at the Northstar in 3v, but I'm not sure how that'd be for field dressing game. And I know I said ~4" but I'm falling in love with a BRKT Little Caper in Buffalo horn.

I'll take a peak at your suggestions, thank you!

Check out some Blind Horse offerings, lots of hunting oriented models and you can pick up their monthly specials on the cheap.

The two most popular deer hunting knives Bark River sells are the Fox River and 125 Heavy Hunter. You can also look at the $55 A.G. Russell Deer Hunter in D2 or Cols Steel's Pendleton Hunter.

Bark River's Drop Point Hunter (the Loveless style) is outstanding. Mine is CPM154, and a ridiculously good knife.

Dozier is a little over your limit, but definitely worth a look also. Fallkniven has some great models. The Buck Vanguard is a great hunting knife, for a lot less. Many great choices, it's a buyers market!

Marbles has some good models too. Every time I edit this post, I think of another manufacturer...

Buck Vanguard or an ESEE 3 or 4. Any of these choices will leave with cash in your pocket and a great hunting knife on your belt. BHK has some great options too.

Lots of good choices out there in your price range.

We had a couple Swamp Rat Rodent Solutions in deer camp last year, awesome field knives. Lots of comfortable handle with 3.5 inches of razor edge that kept cutting and cutting. You'll need to get a sheath with it but there's lots of good options out there. I have around $150.00 into the knife and sheath.

Good luck.

I second Blind Horse Knives, My hunting knife has been a BHK Small work horse its only around 3 inches but ive never had any problems field dressing a PA deer with it. Im thinking of passing it on to my nephew who turns 12 this year and will go on his first hunt where he can take a deer and picking up a new one for my self.

I also cant see the Fallkniven H1 being a bad hunting knife, just got an F1 and love it for bushcraft. Then again I dont hunt...

Thanks for all your input fellas!

Does brkt offer a "big" caper? I haven't seen one yet, and if they had one in 3v I think my bank account would hate me...

These work just fine for me... Rehandled by me. FES
