Cold Steel Master Hunter or Sog NW Ranger....help me decide for whitetail deer and general all purpose use.

Thanks!

I don't have the SOG you're talking about, but the Master Hunter is a whale of a knife for the money. I love mine.

I'm not crazy about the handle material, but it is secure in the hand, and the flat ground Carbon V is a great cutter.

This SOG uses AUS-6 alloy blade and is partially serrated. These aren't particularly desireable in a hunting/camping knife. The Cold Steel knife has an AUS-8 or Carbon-V alloy blade which are both better than AUS-6. The Master Hunter is one of the best hunting knife designs around.

I would also look at the AG Russell Deer Hunter model with VG-10 alloy blade or D2 alloy blade. These are yet another knotch up in materials from the Cold Steel alloys.

Good point on the Sog serrations, especially since I already have a serrated blade on my multi-tool if I needed one.

I'm checking out the Cold Steel and the AG Russell. Seems the AG Russell is very light. Perhaps that is ideal for actual field dressing, but I'm only field dressing 1% of the time I'm in the woods. (Maybe I need to practice my marksmanship a bit). Anyway, I prefer a little more weight which might end up pushing me toward the Cold Steel.

You may want to check out the Fallkniven F1 or the hunter model. VG-10, nicer knives than the CS.
