Are there any Non-Rambo-Looking outdoor fixed blades in S30V? I know that there are some good fixed blades from Chris Reeve, etc...but I'm not one of these 'super tactical, mall ninjas'...I just want a simple, functional knife that looks........'outdoorsy'.........you know, with a wood handle and brown leather sheath. Help me out guys.

Cabellas has an S30V version of the Buck Vanguard for a reasonable price. Go to www.cabelas.com and use the search function to hunt for "Vanguard Alaskan Guide". It has an S30V blade heat treated by Paul Bos. The handle is rosewood with brass hardware. The only thing that isn't woodsey about the knife is a black Titanium Aluminum Nitride coating on it.

Check out Sean O’Hare’s knives. Almost all of his models are available in S30V. Sean offers leather or plastic sheaths.

I have a Silver Raven, and it is one of the most beautiful and functional knives I’ve ever owned. The fit and finish are in the same realm as CRK.

The CR Green Beret doesnt look overly "tactical" It's a good design. They also make it in a 5.5" blade length.

Esav Benyamin,

I really like the knives that you mention...I only wish that they made them in S30V. Perhaps Benchmade will offer more knives in S30V in the future. I hope that they do since I like their products.

Thank you to everyone who responded...I'll check out the other knives mentioned.

You might consider the Becker Extreme 77 (BK-77). It doesn't fit all of your criteria but, if the steel type is your primary concern; it should work for you. TOPs is also showing a new knife, the DART, that looks interesting. It may be too "tactical" for your tastes, though.

isn't S30V too brittle and lacking in strength to make a good outdoor knife? It has great edge retention but I wonder if something softer wouldn't be better.

Chris Reeve would never have made the Green Beret in S30V if it were brittle and weak !!!! Where do you get such weird ideas ???

Add Chase Axinn, @ Chax Knives to the list. His prices on S30V knives are great.

I guess it sort of depends on what one does with an outdoor knife. I prefer something more like 1095 steel for my outdoor use knives but that's because I tend to beat the hell out of them (chopping and prying). I'm usually in a position where I can clean them and address their edges rather promptly after use. It sounds to me that Mathman has his heart set on S30V stainless. I'm guessing he's looking for a stain resistant, cutting blade rather than a chopper and pry bar.
