It's about that time again. Just wondered what you guys will be using for your main big game and small game hunting knife this year? Like many of you I have a ton of knives but when hunting season arrives, I usually dog out the Buck-Lite folder and the Cold Steel. Canadian Belt knife. I sent mine to siguy for a good pro sharpening job. Man does it cut now. I have the same blade in the Grohmann but usually grab the CS.

For small game I usually use my cheap S&W Extreme opps folder mostly because it holds a good edge but is very easy to wash out with the holes in the frame. I hate to loose a good knife and us old guys are prone to leaving his knife lay somewhere.

Hi,

I've been using a Taiwan made Buck small game fixed blade for the last 5 or 6 years. I got a Mora S1 that I might switch to this year.

It's hard for us old guys to switch to something new ya know:D

Here are the two that will be doing the bulk of my work this season.

One is a Buck 103 and the other is a custom I have had since the mid '80s

Probly my Busse comp edge hell razor for my belt knife, there are hogs down there so I figure it will be good to have a blade like that; and a Richard J skinner as my main skinning knife.

I'll be carrying a homemade Loveless-style dropped point made from an M2 power hacksaw blade (~65hrc) and I'll have the Beretta version of the same knife in the truck if I need a spare.

That's for deer---I don't hunt small game much anymore. I think the last squirrel I killed was dressed with a Kershaw mini Vapor.

I am just finishing a knife made from a Power Hacksaw Blade. It almost finished me. Never seen such hard steel. I just need to put a handle on it. Any ideas on blade finish? I have thought about using gun blue on it. I have most of the paint off of it. I will post a picture of it when I get done.

Here it is so far. it's 1 1/2 in. tall and 12 in. long

For big game I have a Buck 105 Pathfinder I have been using for years along with a recently acquired Ka-Bar 1444 skinner. For small game, it will be what ever pocket knife I have on me at the time. Could be anything from a Case Trapper to a Buck Rush or some form of Spyderco or Benchmade.

+1 on the Buck 105 Pathfinder, an outstanding general duty hunting knife. Mine will be on my hip this coming Monday, for the start of CT's archery season.

First hunt is complete last weekend, dove shoot in south AL, cleaned 30 birds with a Moore Maker Muskrat.

Second hunt - Canada: Ducks, Hungarian Partridge and Snows next week. I won't be doing any cleaning but am taking my Leatherman Wave with extra bits in case of equipment repairs. Also will carry a Boker Copperhead.

Deer season - Buck Big Sky, LM Wave and SAK OHT (in PSK). Buck 110 around camp. Of course a traditional slippie of some sort. The Buck Big Sky is over 10 years old and though 420HC, takes and holds a great edge.

I can never decide so I take a dozen knives or so in a Waxed Filson Bag and as the Deer season week goes by either me or my Huntin Buddies of 25 years will use most everyone of em and then we make pro or con comments accordingly. Usually there is one Large FB this year my FBM for Firewood detail. Then two or so 3 to 5 inch FB's for meat work or just utility. Then a half dozen folders that are either new and need a workout or have come along forever. But in my ammo bag for twenty years has been my Blacton Custom and Buck 112....

For deer and Fall turkeys I carry a 17 year old RJ Martin drop point hunter with a 3.5" blade. Skinning and processing gets out the old Russell type sheep skinner and Old Hickory boner.--KV:thumbup:
