Hi Folks,

I just took the dog for a walk in the woods today looking for deer tracks, buck rubs & such. We came across several fresh tracks and a bunch of new rubs. There are a fair amount of white and red acorns lying on the ground as well. I just love Fall, don't you?

What have my fellow hunters be seeing on their scouting trips this early fall season. What species of game are you looking for?

Thanks,

Bob

I was hunting for Ruffed Grouse this weekend.

Lots of cover up still, dog made some good points but when I walked in and they flushed I couldn't even see them.

He found a skunk though, and of course something dead and rotten to roll around in, gotta love hunting in 80 degree plus weather.

Didn't fire a shot all weekend and got to drive 130 miles with a stinky wirehair.

I'll start scouting deer in a few weeks and moving stands around in WI. The locals there are saying we have some monsters hanging around, we'll see.

Good luck

I was out scouting yesterday and saw this sign:

The ol' trail cameras sure tell me a lot more than some hoofprints in the mud! I do love wandering around looking for sign, though. I saw some new rubs and found a couple of oaks (red, though) in an area where I thought there were none for a mile. I'll be checking that spot again! I didn't carry the shotgun for grouse while I scouted because it was a weekend and the area gets a lot of hikers. I didn't flush one bird, so it was no loss.

Here are a couple of rubs I found while scouting/grouse hunting last season. I shot the culprit a month or so later. :)

Couple more years and those will be some dandy bucks.

Acorns ? Everybody loves acorns . It was neat watching a 400 lb bear sitting in the woods and shoveling acorns into his mouth !! I watched a woodpecker ,red bellied, take an acorn , find branches that formed a narrow V ,wedged it in and have a snack !! In a good acorn year the venison is especially good with a sweet nutty flavor .

I missed what might have been their dad the season before last. BIG 10-pt buck. He caught me by surprise on the way to my stand and I shot from the ground through a "tunnel" in the vegetation without laser ranging him. I guessed wrong, used the wrong pin and shot a hair low, tickling his armpit with the fletching. Sadly, he never spotted me and ran in a big circle, stopping about eight yards from me in plain sight, staring at me and sniffing the air. I had another arrow nocked but didn't have my release hooked on. He kept lowering his head to smell the ground --my back trail-- and I finally got it hooked up. By the time I tried to shoot a second time, I couldn't get the bow drawn due to the contorted position I had remained frozen in when he ran up close to me! I stood there shaking and straining, trying to get the compound bow drawn. :barf: That was absolutely the closest I've come to crying while deer hunting!

Since then, I've shelved the compound bows and practiced very heavily with my recurve and instinctive shooting. This season there will be no more sight pins, no more rangefinder, no more release....

I think one year and those would be some dandy bucks...

I'm not that picky. I'd run an arrow through either of them in a heartbeat. :D

The Fall is my favorite time of year also. I'm getting ready for my annual trek to Wyoming to hunt elk with several good friends. I'm preparing physically by hiking our local Northern Cal. mountains as much as time allows. (At least 3x/week for 1+ hours) I'm also doing some bike riding before work and splitting firewood on the weekends. Tonight during my hike I saw 7 blacktail does, one very nice 3x4 buck and two separate flocks of turkeys with about a dozen birds in each flock. Luckily no rattlesnakes, mountain lions, or dope growers tonight. The really fun part begins this weekend when I'll get out all my camp gear and go though it piece by piece. I love the Fall!

go2ndAmend,

I should really do more physical preparation for the rigors of fall hunting. I'll bet those California Mountains are beautiful this time of year. Good luck in Wyoming!

When for a walk with the dog this morning looking for grouse. Lots of leaves still, got one flush and lots of bug bites. Just waiting for the duck season to start.

Hung my stand last Friday, sat in it for a while and saw a few deer walk by. Lots of this year's fawns running around. Didn't have my bow or a permit, so it will probably be a couple weeks before I hunt, unfortunately.
