I'm looking for a fixed blade hunting/skinning knife for around $100 and under. This will be used for some larger game, so i'm wanting something that will hold a edge for the whole process or maybe just sharpen once. Needs great edge retention, love the look of stag handles. I have a bk11 and sharpfinder for some of the finer detail work. Thanks

CRKT Onion Skinner should hold an edge just fine and can be found for under $50. No stag handles on it, though.

If you can find a Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V, GET IT! Great little knife and will last a lifetime.

Do what I did and get a Buck Vanguard. You have options regarding steel, sheath and handle material. I hunt in the cold, so I prefer the rubber grip and the basic 420HC is just fine. It's easy to quickly touch up if needed. Here's my review. Nothing great but you might be interested:

At around $100 you've got quite a few good hunting knives to choose from:

Cold Steel Master Hunter. The old Carbon V version (made by Camillus) was great and can still bee found from time to time, the newer VG1 model is quite good as well.

ESEE 3 or 4. Great all around knives with a fantastic warranty. I like the 3 for game processing.

Spyderco Moran, in either blade style. One of my favourite hunting knives, lightweight, nice steel, comfortable handle and good sheath.

Ka-Bar BK15, if you like trailing point skinners, this is a good one for a pretty decent price.

Helle Symfoni, the blade is a bit on the smaller side for most hunters at 3.5 inches, but it has a fullsize handle and is a very capable knife. If you like Scandis, take a look at Roselli's offerings as well.

Queen has some VERY nice D2 fixed blades, classic design and materials and excellent edge holding. They come with stag handles as well, something you mentioned you liked.

Hello,

I am seriously considering the knife profiled in this thread. It looks to be an AWESOME knife, especially considering it's more than reasonable price. I like, the blade size, the blade shape the O.A.L. and the fact that it is made in the U.S.A. and can be purchase at (as I mentioned) a very reasonable price (if you can find one). Good luck.

Regards,
HARDBALL

You should be able to find a US made Schrade 165OT or 165UH in your price range. They are hard to beat.
