Congratulations ndoghouse! How long of a shaft are you going to use with this fantastic Spear?

This is what I get for not checking the forums. I have been eyeballs deep in Norse Mythology books and videos as of late. Looks like Odin's famed spear Gungnir. I think a shaft made out of ash and carved with runes would look fantastic :)

Good score!

Thanks guys! Yep the Iklwa ive seen is mostly straight sides altho I have seen some with recurve to them. I dont know a whole lot about them except they are cool as heck. Spears have fascinated me since childhood.
Not sure how long I want the shaft? Im thinking six to seven feet total length for the spear. We will see when I get it. The balance has to be a certain % front of center just like an atlatl dart or arrow Im thinking. I make my darts about 10% iirc? These are going to be pretty front heavy im sure. We will see when I get it in my hands. I do plan to throw it. I have a piece of Ipe. I think some call it Desert Ironwood. It may be too heavy and might have to go with ash or hickory? Dont know yet? Now I guess I better pay Aunti Y for it before I forget:)
Ill update yall on it when I get it. I actually wanted three of them so I dont have to go back and forth every time I throw it. There are blacksmiths that make them in the states here in quantity but nothing as Khule as a Purna Vala! She may have more Steely! Check it out. She said she would have more made when the last ones were made so this would be the time I suppose?

Something to consider Danny might be rattan. Why I’m saying that is it’s very flexible and I have several Bo staffs made out of it. Very durable and probably the same material the American young man got “caned” for his “theft” if you can remember! Their “canning” was probably rattan!! OUCH!!!!
Anyway, my thoughts! 6’ are very much available! I have found 7’ rattan but had to search for it!
Anyway I think you’ll do your research.
As I recall, China used something like wax wood for their spears. Maybe Cul can give input on this as I know he has experience in martial arts.

Thx George! Im not sure if I am going to make it for throwing or maybe a shorter King Shaka kinda thing. Was thinking throwing but guess it depends on the socket size and weight etc. From what ive read is that the older ones were used for throwing and later the King introduced the shorter one for close combat with great results. From the pics it looks like a heck of a socket that would be suited for slashing and if so id make a shorter handle.
I thought rattan cane was pretty small. No doubt it would work well for throwing spears but dont know about slashing? Im only familiar with the ratan used for weaving and such. I got plenty of that already. I see they used it for spanking sticks as well! Hmmm? Wife prolly wont let me order that?

The rattan staffs I have are the size of Bo staffs if you’ve ever researched that. 1-1 1/2” diameter and capable of making many strikes against an opponent! These staffs are definitely not designed for weaving but “beating” is more like it! Even my 6’ staffs can be cut down to accommodate.
You’ll figure it out I’m sure. That’s my thoughts but you always come through with a great idea Danny

OK George I know what you mean. I just did not know it was called a Bo staff? Ive just heard them called staffs. I found a site that has plenty of sizes and such even over 7' and over 1.5" diameter. It certainly looks like it would hold up. The only problem with it is I want to index the staff so I dont like the idea of cutting across the fibers or skin in one direction. It may work but not sure? Thanks for the info tho. Im thinking already many other uses for the stuff so that info is great to have filed away.
I got the tri-box in today and man this thing is definitely wicked! It deserves a short shaft for sure! Check out Zulu stick fighting and you will see what I mean. They use a shield with it normally with an upright support extending above and below the shield. Theres plenty of videos of Zulu stick fighting nowadays and it looks pretty dang brutal. I think Filipinos stick fight in similar method as well but i forget what that is called.
Anywayz with a short shaft it can be used to slash and chop as well as thrust. The edge is very convex and seems like it would hold up to some pretty heavy chopping. The socket is forge welded (not surprisingly) and solid as heck. Cant wait to do some chopping! Ill update this when I get the right piece of wood. Im now thinking African wood like bobinga, wenge, zebra, or maybe ebony.

Imagine this with the real thing:
