I'm new here, but not that new to forums or knives. I was just curious what you guys use for your swine hunts. Pictures are nice as well. ;) PGH~

30-06 w/ 150 gr bullet for hog hunting;) . Once dispatched, I like a very sharp fixed blade (such as a Bob Dozier) with enough belley for skinning the thick, tough hide.

You talk about guns on Bladeforums ? Get an 8-12 long blade with strong point and substantial guard. Six very good pig dogs. The dogs corner and hold the pig and you run up and stab the pig in the heart !! I saw a nice video of this done perfectly. Me ? I'll stand back an take the photos !

yeah.no guns on BF.use a trailmaster:D

Hmmm, this has taken an unusual turn in topic direction here. I was not referring to gun hunts for feral hogs, but rather knife hunts.......as this is bladeforums. :p No reason to state the proper method as I have seen it done quite a few times and am very excited to have my chance this spring. I find it hard to believe that on a knife forum nobody here has used the dogs and a proper blade to take a trophey. Comon speak up guys I know your in here, what do you like for this type of hunt. I realize its not the most common or safest way to take a pig, but hey what a rush and what a mental trophey if nothing else. Like I stated before pictures are worth a 1000 words ;) PGH~

too big in my neck of the woods to hunt with just a knife lol.

i have heard of folks doing that but never have myself, i prefer a .300 savage .

If you do a search i had a thread awhile back about hunting with knives and there were a couple of links in there:p .

The trailmaster bowie would be the way to go for a cheaper blade:thumbup:

Welcome to Bladeforums! We do have some pig hunters here, including Larry Harley though he hasn't been posting much lately due to his health (which we're all hoping will improve soon). We also have a peanut gallery of people who respond to threads about pig hunting with comments they imagine to be humorous, but if you're patient some real pig hunters are likely to notice this thread eventually.

The CS Trailmaster is in fact one of the knives recommended by those who hunt pigs.

Thanks for the responses guys and thanks for the welcome Cougar. I was considering the CS Trailmaster, however I think I would rather spend the extra and go with a Chris Reeve Jereboam MKII. At first I was a bit worried about the guard not being so pronounced but upon actually handling the knife the feel and grip are amazing, and the guard is plenty to prevent the hand from coming over onto the blade. Hopefully more hunters will respond with pictures of their blades and hunts, I will take Cougars advice and be patient. PGH~

I havent' been "pig-sticking" as it is called here myself (the pigs didn't show up...), but its a regular past-time, if you go by how many magazines in our local newsagents are dedicated to pighunting.

Popular knives are army surplus bayonets, especially the SIG bayonet which is quite a nice piece of work. Some say that too long a knife and you'll risk stabbing yourself etc. etc. Also apparent F-Dick makes a nifty 7 or 8inch "sticking" knife as part of its kitchen knife range:D

The people I have made "sticking" knives for say they wanted 8-9inch blade, narrow, spear-point, +/- sharpened top edge, thick - 3/16th to 1/4inch thickness for strength, minimal dropped edge to reduce the chance of the blade sticking, large double guard, secure handle that is sure in both directions, lanyard hole in the handle. Yeah I've been boar-hunting one time. It's actually very popular here in NZ, probably more than any other country.

This was many years ago. Back then I used a western cutlery bowie. Not the best knife for that job and I wouldn't use the same knife again, but I was able to dispatch the boar quickly and as painlessly as possible. It was before I knew too much about modern knives.

The dogs are quite routinly killed in such hunts, so I don't think I'll be going again. (I'm a dog knut--I've got pitbulls) Nothing happened when I went, but it always can.

As Jason said, bayonets seem popular. Here in NZ also Muela knives from spain seem VERY popular for boar hunting. I guess they're OK, looking at how many hunters are using them.

I caught a bastard illegally crossing my ranch a few weeks ago as he was coming back from a failed boar hunt. He had some sort of homemade knife, poorly executed it looked like. Looked like he tried to rehandle an old kitchen knife. Idiot.
He also had a lever action rifle slung over his shoulder, which pissed me off. I don't appreciate armed strangers on my land. The rifle, like the knife, also looked very poorly executed.

Thing is, if your knife breaks on a bone, and you don't have a back up, you're dead. So you better make sure whatever knife you have not only stabs well, but is durable and shock resistent too.
A long pointy strong knife is what you want. CS Traimaster as mete said would be a good option. Although it's a little long and might be a bit unwieldly.

This is no game, and it's not like hunting dear. This is true hunting. If you make a mistake, you die.

Best of luck and have fun!
