I thought ya'll might enjoy this video as well. I used Freebird as the song of choice and it really seems to go well with the SW Texas scenery. Last week, during Thanksgiving, I was able to go on an Axis Deer Hunt in Del Rio, Texas. Back in the 90's I got a taste of some Axis Deer and have always wanted to have a freezer full of it. Well fast forward to Thanksgiving 2009 and now my dream has been realized thanks to my friend, Hunter.
The day started with a survey of the ranch and the proper areas to shoot varmint or axis deer. This a beautiful oasis in the middle of some very rough country in SW Texas. The area, called Mud Creek, has the only water for miles. I guess the creek is muddy somewhere, but on this property it runs clean and clear. In lieu of the hunt, the landowner requested that we shoot any varmint we see. I won't go into details, but varmint eradication is serious business and not for the faint of heart. Let's just say we did our fair share of giving back when it came to varmint control.
Since Axis Deer aren't native to Texas, you can hunt them any way you like including spotlighting at night, which is illegal for Whitetail. The biggest challenge to hunting these axis was just finding them. Then we had to make sure they weren't whitetails....that would get us into big trouble on several levels. Hunter was able to score a small Axis doe the first night at around 2am. I ended up getting my small Axis buck the next night at around 1am. I had my Snody Bail Out on my belt the whole time and it really performed when it came time to field dress the deer. In fact it was still sharp enough on the 2nd deer to cut right through the breast bone. I couldn't be happier, the hunt was 100% successful and now I have a freezer full of Axis meat.
