On the advice of a member here (who I still hope to be able to meet up with) I went with a friend to Huntley Meadows in Arlington, VA. Didn't do any bushcrafting or surviving really, but I did make an effort to try and identify what few plants and animal species I know. It was a beautiful day out and the area wasn't at all crowded (probably because of the heat). Anyways, enjoy.

Huntley meadows is actually a pretty large wetlands. They have a few sections of trail that go through the woods, and some unofficial ones that come in from nearby houses, but the swamp area was the prettiest.

It's hard to see, but I believe that a large portion of the greenery in this "meadow" is actually cat tails. Or, as one person referred to them, cat 'o' nine tails. I've never heard them called that, and for some reason it made me think leather...

There was a plethora of wildlife out today, however, most of it was too fast to photograph. I think the wildlife here has a healthy respect for the danger a person can represent. We saw a small lizard, hundreds of frogs, "toadlets", Egrets, Blue Herons, a small crane similar to a Night Heron, turtles, Red Winged Black Birds (possibly Yellow Winged as well), small fish, two deer, and a dead Mollusk.

I went pretty light this trip. Two peanut butter and honey sandwiches, two Klean Kanteens full of Gatorade, a SAK of unknown type, a LMF firesteel, and a small hunk of fatwood. The latter of which all live in my pack anyways. I also got to wear my Tilley hat which I really do like. I think that for this environment an AirFlo model would have been ideal though. The Cotton Duck is too heavy, and there's too much humidity for it to evaporate effectively.

Duzzy- I'm glad you made it out to Huntley Meadows and were able to check out the off trail parts. I'm sure we will get out there as soon as I get back from Costa Rica. I've got a bunch of other places to show you as well.

Thank you everyone for the kind remarks.

Don't worry, I'm certainly not stressing. However, now that you have a CCF 'Hawk we have to meet up. I very much want to see it. I also found a fellow Thespian who backpacks; which is akin to finding a unicorn (so I'm super excited about that as well).
