I know how generous the folks here on the porch are, so here's your chance to help out & maybe get a free knife. I have a like new Queen #49 that I'll give away to a random porch member who donates to the Hurricane Harvey Releif efforts.

I'm going to keep it as simple as possible with the rules:
1. Donate to the Hurricane Harvey Relief effort in any way, before September 9, 2017, then
2. Post here that you contributed.

I'm not asking for proof that you donated or how much, just donate & post a reply in this thread that you donated. I'll pick a random post number on September 10 & announce the winner here in this thread, then the winner can PM me their shipping address. You must be 18 to enter & must be able to legally own a knife. US shipping only.

The knife is like new, comes with box & has been carried maybe twice. It's just larger than I like my stockman style knives.

Paypal has an option that allows you to donate directly through them. You can pick from a number of different charities, and all fees are waived by PayPal.

I picked All Hands Volunteers because a lot of people are going to need help rebuilding. Harvey flooded a lot of homes that were not in known flood zones, so a lot of the people whose homes were destroyed would not have had flood insurance. All Hands Volunteers is well rated according to Charity Navigator: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=13109

I donated $25, because that is what I bid on a knife I really didn't need this morning, and I figure I can give at least as much to those who are in need as I was about to spend on yet another knife to throw in the box in the safe.

I'm in by the way. I do still want more knives ;)

Thanks for the info about making donations through PayPal that's a great idea. I'm going to go do that right now. :)

Wal Mart was contributing $2 for every $1 of contributions to the Red Cross through their website, up to a $10M limit. That's how I contributed, but I see this morning that their $10 million limit has been reached.

It's good to see our country coming together in support of those who have been affected by this historic flood, but then, that's what Americans do. Most of us, anyway.

I awoke at 6 am this morning and the power was off and just came back on. I guess it was off from all the rain but no flooding and no damage. It made me both thankful for being safe here on the side of this mountain but really sorry for all those folks in Texas. I can't imagine being displaced from flooding at my age it must truly be a horrific
experience for those folks. It made me come to the realization that I need to help in someway. I can't do much but I can donate and I would encourage all of you that can please do. If a million people would donate just $10 all of a sudden cumulatively there's $10,000,000 to help so yes our donations can help.

I posted this yesterday morning in Carl's Lounge and donated through PayPal. I really appreciate and thank you for doing this Ironbut it is a very generous class act.:thumbsup:

Thank you, Randy. I've been called many things in my 69 years, but never a class act! :)

I donated to the JJ Watt Houston flood relief fund before it hit 5 million.... This morning it was over 16 million when I checked.....

I did P.P. yesterday. My son who lives in Austin is in Houston now with some of his work friends. They took vacation time to go down and volunteer. They were unloading trucks and distributing goods when I spoke to him yesterday. He also said,"Yes Dad, I do have a pocket knife with me. My Farmer." Makes me proud of him. Thanks for the GAW since I no longer have a stockman.--KV

Reminder: Tomorrow is the last day for the Queen #49 GAW. Donate to the Hurricane Harvey relief effort in any way, then post here. Thanks for everyone's generosity.

I am a wee bit bummed that not more folks have chimed in here, though it is quite possible that there are some who just do not wish to disclose their charitable endeavors, which is completely understandable.
A great cause, for sure, especially due to the the devastation that so many folks are experiencing down there. With Irma bearing down on Florida, we could be seeing some similar destruction occurring there as well.

My wife and I try to give as often as we can to organizations that we care about and the American Red Cross happens to be one of them. Though we have had to tighten the purse strings a bit this month due to the kids going back to school and my wife, who is a teacher, going back to work, we were still able to manage a donation to the Red Cross and I have opted to refrain from knife purchases this month to show some form of solidarity. Hopefully it is ok with the mods but I will go ahead and provide the link here to to the American Red Cross website where it is very easy to donate whatever you can:

Thank you, Ironbut Ironbut , for facilitating this. Hopefully the folks in Florida will not have to endure as much devastation when Irma arrives.

On the one hand the odds are good for me, but on the other I would really prefer that more people participate in this GAW.

I was hoping for a bigger response too, but like they say, "It is what it is!"
Thanks to all who donated & participated. I'll announce the winner tomorrow.

Winner of the GAW is r redden! Thanks to everyone who donated to the relief effort in any way & thanks for participating in my first GAW.
Randy, if you'll PM me your address, I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow.
Thanks again, everyone,
Lynn

Congrats to Randy! I waited to post in this thread until after a winner had been chosen, as I did not want to throw my hat into the ring. My wife and I loaded a box of baby supplies last week to be shipped off to West Louisiana. It looks like another box will, unfortunately, be heading to Florida next week. Thank you, Ironbut, for drumming up some much needed help for our fellow neighbors.
