One day an earthquake....the next a hurricane.

Irene is set to pass directly over us about 12-1AM Sunday. It will be a category 2 at the time. About 10" of rain will drop over 24 hours.
Luckily, flooding is not a problem for me, but many areas nearby will have bad problems.

The good thing is that there will be enough rain to flood the Dismal swamp, and put out the peat fire that has been burning for over a month. Every day it looks like fog, and the smoke smell is intense.

Good luck riding the storm out. Up north here in Syracuse we should be fine, worried about our friends in the NY/NJ/Boston area. Hey Aldo, Mace, Good luck and be careful.

All the best there, we have very quiet weather and I plan to go to the remote cabin to enjoy the late summer conditions. My thoughts are with all those who are on the path of this intense storm. Hope all is secured and that you have plenty of gas for the generator, Scotch and Dvds.

Board up tight, and keep your heads down. Hope everyone comes through no worse-for-the-wear.

Stacy, they always hit in the middle of the night.
Been through 8 pretty big ones and I hate those things.
I went out during Fredric 115MPH tried to save a storm window[2'x6'] it was laying flat, got upwind and got hold of it and picked it up. Yep- tiger by the tail, lucky, but I got it inside.
Catrina was bad, We were inside as pcs of house were torn away, portion of outside wall, bow window , pc of roof ,told Deb to head for the truck and just as we were in the truck the entire roof blew off. Over our heads and across the rd. the entire house was destroyed along with everything in it.And of course NO INS.

So buddy, keep your eyes open and your head down, and good luck. Jerry

It has been raining about eight hours, now. The storm is going to hit earlier than expected, and should have passed, by midnight tonight. It has disorganized and lost energy, and the winds have dropped to 90 MPH. It will also track just east of us, which is a very good thing. 40-55 MPH winds will run steady, with 65 MPH gusts for four or more hours this afternoon and evening. Flooding will be extensive, but far fewer trees will go down. We are set for 10-15 inches of rain and the storm will now be here at high tide. Last forecasts are for a 5-8 foot storm surge, which on top of the higher than normal tide ( moon phase) should cause all the low lying areas to flood. Even though the creek on the side of my property is the end of Little Creek Inlet, I am on the highest spot in this section of Norfolk, so I have no concerns of water problems.

Along the east coast everything is IRENE ! But where are the Earth Muffins ?? I thought they would all be out there harvesting the free enegy !!
All too much hype these days but that's how everything is being presented .

Storm went inland early and hit the mainland instead of the outer banks. It then stalled for a couple hours. 1/2 million without power and it hasn't really done much moving toward us yet. Winds are down to 85 MPH.
We have had relatively calm weather all afternoon, after the rather blustery morning.
Areas south and west are getting pounded, as is Sandbridge. A few tornadoes have been spawned. Serious flooding in many places. Storm won't be here for three or four hours.

Good luck, looks like you are getting it now.. I had to shut the job site down in Queens NY and head back to the house.

Storm passed with no real problems for Judy and I. I heard that over one million people are without power, so I am thankful.
We lost a few branches, and one tree by the creek. It was a mulberry that I won't miss at all. Other than a lot of leaves and tiny branches everywhere, it looks like there normal outside.
The creek is normally 4-6 feet wide and 5-10 inches deep. Last night at high tide and full storm surge it was 40 feet wide and eight feet deep. It came up to about three feet lower than the wood shop, and four feet lower than where the new shop will sit. The house is ten feet higher than that, so we will never likely see water at the back door.
I am going out in a while to cut up the tree and then drive around and check on some older people.
There was serious flooding in some places, but none near me. Sadly there were several deaths in the storm.

Thanks for all your thoughts . I'm going out to cut firewood now.

Glad to hear that you two made it relatively unscathed. I bet seeing the creek that high sure was a sight.

Damn mulberry trees. Around here they are almost as bad as soft maples.

No problems here thankfully. Mostly rain with minimal wind.

My brother had a few trees go down in his yard, so I'll probably spend a few days cutting those down.
