I have always been active up until a few years ago...
I am 25 right now and used to play soccer all the time... running up and down the field like nothing...

I few weeks back i decided to get active again... so i decided to start going hiking...

Two weeks ago I went hiking at Rocky Peak, here in CA (by simi valley I think)... I would say this place is like a dessert (maybe tknife will correct me :D) and after about an hour my knee started bothering me but i did not pay attention to it... the next day i went hiking again to Placerita Canyon... and on the trail we were walking and running and it was fun...

But two weeks later and my knee still hurts (hurts less than a few days ago but hurts)...

What do you guys think I should do? I really want to go back hiking again, but I don't want to risk messing up my knee more... I believe that two weeks should have been enough... actually if i go hiking it would be this coming weekend.. by then it will be 3 weeks... What should i do? Based on your own experience, should i wait longer???

I suggest a knee band or elastic band used just under the knee joint for support when your active. Ice after your active. And regular strengthening exercises.
I'm 18 years older than you and have driven trucks for 25 years. Knee issues, at times really bad ones, come and go for me. One thing I can suggest is always be aware of how your planting your foot as you walk. Try to keep your knee and foot inline every step you take no matter if it is a incline, decline or level.
Of course you should see you doctor to rule out any injury that may have occured.

Yeah we have high desert type weather and terrain here. Another couple months an we'll be seeing way too many triple digit days.

If you haven't been active in a while, you should definitley start out slow. Take easy walks and gradually increase the distance. Your legs will strengthen as you go. If you twisted your knee, you may want to take it easy for a while. Let it heal and you'll be back hiking in no time. But if you keep pushing it you could injure it worse.

Be careful how much weight you're carrying. If you go into rough country, you should have some gear but keep it light.

I'll weigh in here. I hurt my knee at 19, and am now 33. I was running a lot at the time and pushed too hard one day. Ran again the next day, and the next day. The fourth day, I couldn't run. I saw a doctor and they said it was a "Strain". A couple months later I saw another doctor and they said it was a "strain". I saw a doctor once a year (kaiser) untill I was 25 and they told me to take Motrin or Vicodin and keep truckin'. Well, at 25 I thought "I'm too young for this shit, and I'm not taking any more "keep on trucking" nonsense. I made them give me an X-Ray and then an MRI and they said it looked like a torn meniscus. Then we did arthroscopic surgery and when I awoke, the doctor said "I didn't find anything, sorry" and kaiser swept me under the rug again. They told me some people just experience knee pain. SERIOUSLY? Every subsequent visit has yielded the same results as the first six years and I'm going in for X-Rays again next week because it has moved up to my hip. You're young and shouldn't have knee pain. See a doctor before you go out and make sure they asses your situation. It isn't something you should take lightly. You could wind up having pain there the rest of your life. I over did it and I shouldn't have. Don't take any bull from HMO's or insurance companies and stay away from Kaiser.

:( Do use a walking stick? IF NOT TRY ONE THEY HELP WHEN WALKING ON ROUGH TRAILS. I HURT MY LEFT KNEE 5 YEARS AGO; IT BOTHERS ME SOMETIMES, BUT NOTHING TO BAD.

I have a bunch of joint issues, (at 28) I am very active. I find that if I do any one activity too much, I get an injury. If I bike too much I get a knee injury, if I hike to much its ankles/knees. Recent injury is my right elbow (tendonitis I think) from over doing it at the Gym. So I can only hike like once every other week. (I'm talkin like 8-10 miles over very rugged mountain terrain)
Anyway, these injuries are pretty much a constant issue, something always hurts. So, I rest that part and do whatever other activity I can. And I also find that the more I vary activity the less I get hurt.

I feel you... i am 25 and sometimes i think that i shouldn't be going through this... i am also trying to heal a shoulder wound that i had a few months back (which makes it so i can't carry too much stuff on my back - this sucks)...

I am planning a camping trip in a couple of weeks... maybe i'll wait till then before I hike again...

Maybe next weekend i'll walk on the tread mill for a bit to get my knee stronger again...

I mean, the pain has decreased, but still there after two weeks...

When I was very heavy, I used to get knee pain. I would get on my bicycle, in Central Park in New York City. A few hours, every day or so for a week, and the knees were fine. When I was riding regularly, nothing bothered the knees. I did a lot of walking, too.

i have a military background. we got lots of knee injuries.

one thing you have to remember is that when your knee hurts it might not be your knee at all - it might be something like a slightly pinched nerve in your back, etc.

wrapping knees and continuing running always seemed like a bad idea to me, especially since most of the wraps are done wrong and jsut aggravate the condition.

we had extremely fit backs from all the pull-ups we were required to do, and that seems to help a lot with injury resistance.

backs and knees love ice for the first twenty minutes after a work out, and then hot water submersion a couple times a day for them to bounce back fast.

rest and swim, is my advice. the season is perfect for it.

Check with a podiatrist (sp?) or go to a good running shoe store.

My wife runs and mentioned looking at a more supportive sole since I have flat feet. I now get Brooks Beast shoes. They cost alot but I can tell a big difference when I wear my boots for winter. I get knee pain (like an icepick) and my lower back starts to hurt more. Not bagging on anyother brands but I've been through a few and this brand/model does me good. YMMV

I also get insoles from a place called Runningfit (get my shoes there also and switch out the stock insoles). You step and a scale and it tells you what insoles to buy based on pressure (they usually have them on the wall). The name is Lynco Orthotics and they are great but run around $40 US.

Gettin new shoes depending on use is a big factor also.. I heard you need new shoes every 400 miles or 6 months whichever comes first. This may also vary depending on your weight.

Hope this helps and you get it taken care of.

Way back when...I was about 23 years old or so and in a summer soccer league. Someone invited a ringer in to play on our team and he took me out by kicking me from behind when I was sweeping my left foot to contact the ball at grass level. My cleats were jammed into the turf stopping my foot dead while the force of his kick and mine was taken completely by my left knee. POP!
My left leg was like the scarecrow in the old Wizard of Oz...loose as a goose. The tendons and/or cartilage securing the outside of my knee were unattached.
I was between jobs and had no insurance or money for a doctor.
I bought a huge bottle of vitamin E gel capsules, opened four or five at a time and spread the contents on my knee and wrapped it in an Ace Bandage. I then would swallow 4 or five with a glass of water every 4 hours or so every day for as long as the bottle lasted.
Within a month or so my knee was back to normal. I could do deep knee bends with no ill effects. And for the next 30 years my left knee was actually "better" than the right!
Admittedly, I have always healed well...better and faster than most. Nevertheless, I swear by Vitamin E and always will.
See a doctor if you can. DON'T do nothing.
Good luck.

I would suggest checking out runner's world to see if you can match up your symptoms to common knee injuries. Then, research the injury so that you have some idea about what's going on. Then, make a decision about seeing a sports medicine doc.

thanks for all the info... i have multivitamins and i'll start taking them... i'll go to the store and get some vitamin E... i have a pool in the apartment (not inside of course :D) and i'll start swimming since it seems like it's a little hot now...

thanks a lot :D

Sometimes I hate going to the doctor... I went a few times and they tell me that my shoulder injury is normal... i should just wait until pain goes away... i'd hate to pay 25 bucks for them to tell me the same thing about my knee...
