:D well i finally broke down and did it...ordered myself the hatchet from my husqvarna dealer. should be here in a week. i'm thinking about removing the handle and replacing it with a 19". i picked up a 19" handle with darn near perfect grain tuesday.
well see, i don't know if i can bring myself to destroy a perfectly good handle just to put on one that is a little longer. i'm thinking i can get a friend of mine to grind and polish the poll to make it like the GB hunters axe and save myself around a hundread bucks or so.
just an ideal. any thought/advice?

I love my Husky hatchet and all I did was sand the head smooth. I also have one of the Husky axes, but I have thinned the handle on it quite a bit. There very good quality for the money.

You could probably remove the handle for reuse later. The Husky hatchet in the review by Ross didn't have a metal wedge, which makes removal easier. For those who haven't done this before (like me), here's how Peter Vido told me to do it:

It helps if the head is somewhat loose, in which case chop hard with it to make the head move up a bit, exposing the little "shelf" normally just under the head (which the head rests on). Carve around the handle a little to lower this "shelf" a quarter inch. Then hit the head down the quarter inch (using a hammer and wooden block), which will result in the handle extending above the head by a quarter inch. With a saw (a hacksaw will do), cut off this quarter inch of handle on both sides of the wedge, leaving the wedge intact. Then you'll have a quarter inch of wedge to grip with pliers, etc., for removal. Once the wedge is out, bang the head up off the handle.

This is also Peter's preferred way to tighten a loose head, by lowering it a bit and resetting the wedge.

If the head is initially not loose at all, it can still be done, but the carving work probably won't be as "pretty".

I sure love both of the Huskies that I won. You can't go wrong with them, especially for the price!

thanks for the advice/help.
rg598; that looks really nice and i'm always looking for a new project. thanks!

The CS Trail Boss is 23 inches instead of 19 inches but only weighs about 21/2 pounds total. It cost about $30-$35 and arrives sharper than most axes. I like it well enough that I bought one for my grandson, a scout, for Christmas a year ago. He loves his as well. Add it to your list to consider.
