hybrid gs

Just received a new 18" GS by Kumar. It is not a blem in any way. The khuk is very well done fit and finish about perfect. The fullers are not exceptionally deep but even and well defined. The reason I call it a hybrid is that the cho is Kobra style. The handles on all three are excellent! Don't have a definitive on it's true chopping ability yet but the hardness and edge bevels appear to be about perfect. Only needed a little touch-up to sharpen this one. The weight on this one is a little heavier than could be if the fullers were a little deeper but makes for one tough khuk. This one would make a good field knife for those in the military.

HH,

That is not a hybrid GS. If you take a look at the FAQs, you'll notice that the original GSs came with enclosed chos. The GSs with the open chos are the ones that stray from the normal design. I have a GS that I got in May 2000 that has the enclosed cho.

Enclosed is standard for the GS but they sometimes make it with normal cho for what reason I don't know.

Same with mine. I think that is intentional. the deepest fullers on any HI khuk I own is the YCS. I own a 21" GS by Kesar, and blued the '3 suns' pattern in it...

That is beautiful! I have never seen anything like this before!

How did you do that? What is blueing? How well does it stick to the blade?

How did you do that?
Practice, Practice. Seriously, though, I taped the entire blade with brown box tape, drew the design on the tape, the used an exacto knife to cut out the design. then I applied the blueing solution and followed their directions. Details at this thread:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=200411&highlight=seax

What is blueing?
Blueing is a chemical process (sometimes involvinng heat) used to make gun parts and blades more resistant to corrosion. The stuff is called PremaBlue, and is commonly found in gun shops or sporting goods stores. (Might be tricky to find if Norway doesn't have guns. I didn't see any in Iceland, either). Here's a link to their online store:
http://www.birchwoodcasey.com/index_a.html
Additional info on metal finishes:
http://magichammer.freeservers.com/metal_finishes.htm
Contains a good one involving linseed oil and wax for blueing.

How well does it stick to the blade?
Pretty good. Since it sort of corrodes the top layer of steel, it is etching the steel. If you blue an entire blade (as I did with my 18" AK), the striking area will wear slightly, and brighten up. I could reapply, but the wear is cool looking...

Thanks and you are correct. I know that the enclosed cho goes with the GS. Guess it's just me thats abnormal. Time to take some time off! Like the art work on the GS Keith. :D . I'm not complaining about the deepness of the fullers, just my observation. I have a 21" by Durba that has much deeper fullers. Both GS's are great just a little different. I guess the difference in the cho's is that the one of the Durba looks like the GS on the website. While the Kumar one looks like the one on my Kobra. Thats all.

Thanks a lot for your recipie and links Ferrous!

Since it is a chemical process that bites into the steal then I guess it will not fade away so easily. Sounds good.

I think I will try to find some Norse symbol and see if I can decorate a blade with it. I will try it when I find something I like.

Guns are for sale in Norway, we are a bit Canadian when it comes to hunting statistics. Although I don't know of any pure gunshops except in Oslo. I guess I can get some of that blueing stuff in a wildlife/sports store somewhere here in Trondheim.

I had a look at that link you showed with your earlier work. Pretty good I must say. Every time I see things like that I feel like picking up knife making just as a relaxation. My old woodwork teacher back in elementary school told me my knife handles were good (the only things I made he told me were anything special), so maybe I should do just that one of these days.

Thanks again and nice extra pictures.

Thanks for that Futhark!

I thought about something like that. Making an inscription somewhere on the blade in runes seems appropriate. Just to have the good will of the higher forces.

But I have also seen some nice Norse patterns on some leatherwork that I wonder about applying. Take a look at these sheaths.

Now, how exactly to get those patterns from those internet pictures over to my blade I haven't quite figured out yet. But I guess there is stuff out on the internet to find. And also I could contact a museum somewhere and get some patterns.

Thoas are some spiffy sheaths, done in the Urnes style of decoration. Around the second half of the 11th c., this style began to overtake the Ringerike style.

The Urnes style gets its name from this 900 year old Stave church:

aalthough called a church, it was a center for reverinng the old gods, then was appropriated by the church likr most pagan sites.

There's a book I picked up in the South of England, called
"Celtic Design: The Dragon and the Griffin--The Viking Impact" by Aidan Meehan, and it shows some great illustrations of viking interlace patterns and how they interconnected with celtic culture. If you can get it, it would be a good starting point for patterns.

...I thought you might like those sheaths!

I see you have a lot of good knowledge on our common Norse culture and mythology. That's impressive. You should have become a historian you know.

Lucky that guy Varg Vikernes didn't manage to burn down all our churches by the way. Don't know if you heard about him in USA.

Thanks for the advice on literature. I will see what I can get done. There might be some other books around here in Norway too.

Thanks.

Yeah, I have a few degrees in History. Medieval Studies, ancient hist, General history. Found Tech writing to pay the bills.

Varg Vikernes -- haven't heard of him. Details?

Keith

The cho has a practical purpose: it keeps blood from draining onto the handle. It seems to me that an enclosed cho would fail in this respect.

Well that sure explains it. I thought you were a techie until now!

Brace your soul...

Born Kristian Vikernes in Bergen in 1973. Changed his name to Varg (=wolf). He is now serving his 21 year jail sentence for murder and three arsons of churches.

Varg Vikernes considers himself a Germanic warrior fighting to save his people (all Germanic raced people in this world). He considers Christianity a religion for southern races and an instrument to pacify the Germanic spirit so Germanics in the end will perish by race mixing. So he burned some old Norwegian stave curches, 1000 years old, to the ground. Probably more as an act of vengeance rather than as a constructive way of eradicating Christianity from Norway.

He was convicted for murdering his co-satanist by knife stabbing. He was also sentenced for 3 arsons on churches, but nobody knows how many of the church fires he was involved in, as there were several.

He has been a satanist and Black Metal musician. Black Metal is a Norwegian music genre that has become an export article from Norway to the other countries who also have some satanists. Last thing I heard was Brazilian Black Metal bands singing in Norwegian because it sounded more evil to them.

Varg Vikernes became a known figure in Norwegian mass media some years ago. The strange thing about this guy is that he is in fact intelligent. He has written books and articles of Norse mythology and culture that are said to be on a high level, good enough to lead a discussion with professors. So he is an example of a young intelligent man who chose his own path in life by giving up the accepted norms of current society. Most people are disgusted by him, others give him cult status and can't wait to meet him when he is released from prison in not so many years from now. Norwegian jail sentences are a bit lax with maximum sentence for murder being 21 years, and that means 16 years if you smile a lot...

Hey 21 years aint bad. The 4 guys who were convicted of brutally (and I mean brutally) killing a classmate a day after graduation got nothing in comparisson. 2 got 4 years (well the court excused they were juvenilles at 15 and 16) each, and the other two who were adults got 8 years each. You factor in time off for good behavior, 2 years and 4 year sentences, and they got away with shooting, and then stabbing, and then beating a friend to death. Then again, the town seemed to have a habit of not caring when dark people get killed or beaten. 4 racist guys who beat a 8 year old Somali boy all got probation, even though the kid was hospitalized and will never be able to chew or breath properly again. Whereas 2 minorities who fended off a Neo-Nazi attack got 12 years each for beating them instead. I love this country, but its cases like those that really make me hate some judges and police officers. :barf:

Hi Eik and Keith,
Thanks for the history. I am of Norwegian desent also have some Swede in there. I enjoyed the pics of the knives that you put up Eik! Thanks. I like the input on the cho. I can see some real merit to your explaination Flic. Thanks. Regret never getting to Norway while I was stationed in Europe. Someday maybe.
