Alright. Let's talk hydration while on the trail on the mountain bike.

I have a Camelbak Mil Mule and a Camelbak Lobo. I've found that I really like the waist straps on the Mule and use it quite a bit. The size is perfect but the thing, actually the only thing that I've found to not like about it is that I can't easily stash my rain jacket on the outside of the pack which is where I prefer to put it. I've been looking at getting an Osprey pack but I have such a hard time justifying spending $100+ on a new pack when I have something that works just fine.

What are you guys using?

I ride with no bottle cages and no saddle bag so everything is on my back when I ride. I drink a decent amount. This time of year probably around a liter an hour.

Thanks!

A) Cut up some fat bike tubes. That will get you huge Ranger bands that you can slip over the whole bag and then attach your jacket with.

B) Ball up the jacket and put it in with the bladder.

Ha. Fat bike tube over the whole thing! Like riding with a sausage on my back. Lol

Fold and roll the rain jacket. Use two or three loops of shock cord with cord-locks to secure it to the outside of the pack. Try twisting the shock cord once before inserting the jacket. The twist puts an angled pull on the jacket to keep it prom sliding out.

For rain jackets on the outside of my back, my packs either have bungies (older camelbak classic) or has side pockets (older dueter race exp air). More often than not I simply roll it up and stick it in a jersey pocket but if you're not wearing a jersey with rear pcokets that's not as much of an option, or if the pack covers up the two outermost pockets. The camelback classic I have allows use of the two outside pockets very well but that's usually food storage for me.

I know some people that will stuff items into a water bottle but You might be able to get a stuff sack and carabiner clip or two and clip it on. A lot of my down mid-layer puff vest/coats came with stuff sacks that would work well like this and I assume a rain shell would work well like that as well.

Looking at the current mil mule on google, it looks like you might be able to use some velcro straps to cinch it down pretty easily. If you get elastic ones you can probably just slip the jacket in there without the need to open the velcro.
