The plans James Batson worked out are probably as good as it gets he's one of those NASA guys, all the hydralic research has been done by him. Or just go to a place that sells the stuff and let them tell you what you need$

Indian George, I built one last year. It develops 32 tons. It has a 5" dia. ram 3hp electric 220volt motor, 2 stage log splitter pump with adjustable hydraulic pop-off on the 4way valve. I asked alot of people to help me but know one knew what I was talking about until I told them I was building a heavy duty log splitter. Yours only needs a 12" travel. I got a good deal on my 24" ram and only use 8" of it. With the shorter ram you could build a bench top press. Mine is 7' tall! The dies are time consuming to make. Be sure they slide on and off easy and quick. That is the hard part of making damascus. Email me if you want details. Bruce

Indian George, I don't know much about hydraulics but here's a good source for hydraulic supplies. Northern TOol and Equipment Co. has a website at: NorthernTool.com. It has tons of stuff for the do-it-yourselfer. It's better if you order a catalog, though. Lots of stuff to see and think about.
