I've been planning a press using the Batson book. I will end up with 25ish tons on a 5" cylinder with a 5 HP motor, exact specs pending what pump I end up with.

The charts in the book suggest that a 12" 26lb per foot beam will work with a 1" plate welded to the front. I was given a 13 FOOT long piece of 12x26. Would two 12x26 welded together to make a 24" deep beam be sufficient?

Chat GPT says that a pair of 12" beams welded together to make basically a 24" beam will be more than sufficient. Twisting load is still potentially problematic, but flexing of the beam itself will be fine. And a few gussets should be enough to stiffen up the twisting potential.

Jason, I was reading your first post, and didn't have enough info to make a comment. Is this for the main beam of a "C" style press? If a C style the distance of cylinder from the main beam will affect how much pressure/bend will result. If mounting the cylinder as close as reasonable to the main beam I'd suspect a single 12X26 I-beam would be just fine for a 25 ton press. If after building you decided there was too much flex in the main beam it would be easy to then weld the 2nd 12X26 I-Beam for extra support. 2550 psi will give the desired 25 tons, "assuming" no loss in system - 100% efficient.

Did Chat GPT mention if this was with a solid weld full length of I-Beam? OR, would sections be ok?

Yes, this was solid weld full length. Since I have the material, I figure I might as well try it. Yes, C style. I figure it'll be 2.5 or a tiny bit more off of the beam, to account for the 5" cylinder radius. Otherwise, planning as close as possible.

Closing in on getting the shop build started. Looking like a 18x24 enclosed with a 18x24 carport. Hope to start that later this month. Press is for after that.

You gonna have a NICE shop - will that be a 36 ft X 24 ft building with half enclosed and the other half carport style for forge, etc? That's going to be NICE.

Do not trust ChatGPT for engineering questions. It's a text generator, and one programmed to produce text that agrees with the user at that.

I'm having trouble picturing what you're talking about, maybe draw up a basic schematic?

18 wide by 48 long, 24x18 each half.

HH like that lol. Instead of IH like the plans specify with 1" plate.

If I add the cylinder, you end up with OHH or OIH. OHIO is too much trouble lol.
