Hydraulic press plans

Dr James Batson has plans for a great forging press.
You might want to consider taking a look at his plans.

That will not stand up to the constant duty that is needed to make Damascus.
I got pic's on my site of the one I built, but the next one will be a H press with a minimum of a 5" cylinder.

Seems like we just very recently discussed this.

Don Fogg sells the Batson press plans, go to his site and look up the press page. I built the Batson H frame with the cylinder on top, simple to build and works great.

Check out Batson's booklet. That 20 ton press you saw was a shop press, too slow and too weak for knife making.

I'd recommend buying an old used press, and customizing it to your liking. I just got a 60's Oilgear 20ton Hydraulic press, weighs over 5000lbs, with a power unit for 500$. Shipping cost me more than the press, but the frame is magnificent. Before putting together one from scratch, I'd recommend looking at the old presses, even if just for the frame and power unit.
