Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows whether Hytest ever stamped their axes with just a "H" and the weight (eg "41/2")

There is a rather nice looking axe i have seen for sale in a second hand store, it has a "H" stamped on the underside of the pole and a "4 1/2" on the top side of the pole (behind the eye for both marks). The seller claims it is a Hytest, but i have only ever seen Hytest stamped on the cheek, never just the letter. Whats the chances of it actually being a Hytest?

Cheers

I'd say "not very likely." However, a pic would really help. Where are you located? It is more likely Helko.

I have seen a few crates of Hytest axes when working for Queensland Forestry during the seventies. They often had the weight stamped on but I don't remember seeing any with just an H. I'm not saying it's not a Hytest though, just that I've never seen one.
A pic or two would be good. Is there a haft in the axe? Any remnants of paint? What colour?

Was bidding on a nice Hytest Challenger last week, but so was someone else with more to spend.

regards...Frank

I'm in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Don't have a picture, but I could get one. No haft, no paint. Google couldn't give me a company that just used a "H" either :(

The reason I would guess its a Helko is that they frequently stamped the underside of the poll with HW for "Helko Werk." But I might be off on that. Do you know what pattern it is?

I you're in Tassie mate and are interested in Hytest, they should not be hard to find.

Just for your interest I saw a nice Tasmanian pattern KELLY sell for over a hundred bucks recently.
This morning I was using one of my favourite axes. A KELLY Dandenong. Are you familiar with them? Made in Canada for the Australia/NZ market back in the day. Very very popular here along with Plumb and of course that Aussie champion Hytest.

I have heard of the Dandenong, but not seen one in the flesh. I'm not specifically chasing a Hytest, more just seeing what this one is. I will try and pop in and grab a couple of pics of it this afternoon. They had a Kelly in there too, going for $95, didn't take enough notice of the pattern as it was out of my price range right now, but I know where it is and I doubt it will go far when I do have some spare coin for it...

what are the diferences between the tas and Dandelong axes?. I have a couple of kelly axes and think i may have one of each

If it's an "H" in a shield then it may be from the Charles E. Hall Company. They made impact tools.
