Look Robin, I'm actually putting a 'hawk in the 'hawk and axe forum..
Last week I wanted to throw a hawk and I couldn’t find a one here. Didn’t realize they had all gone to new owners.
So over the weekend I fired up the Redbud Forge and done four. This is the first sort of finished, still want to do a
little more to the haft and make a cover…

It is a wrap around made from a file and the beard is a piece of another real old Nicholson file heat welded in between.
(I don’t trust the iron in the newer ones for the cutting edge) All hand and file work.
17″ haft, head is 7″ with 3.5″ sharp. The haft is from a chunk of maple firewood I split a couple of years ago, drawfiled,
oiled, torched and scrapped. I only get a while at night to work on them so I’ll show the rest as they come along…….Randy

Randy, I was about to put a nessie in the hawk forum ;-))) That's a very cool bearded hawk. How does she throw?

R

She throws a lot better the I do. I'm working on me a thrower now. Bullet....ERRR....Randy proof.....

Randy, I like your bearded hawk. I can't wait to see the others you are making. How do the bearded hawks throw compared to other hawks? I can't wait to see Robin's Nessie either. I have always wanted a real Nessie Trio. Let the competition roll!

My family wonders why I buy old files at the flea markets for50 cents or a buck or 2? My girls are happy to take an old rasp and eat up some old scrap wood into dust, and if I ever get a forge going I will be loaded for hawks.

pretty neat looking cleaver Randy.

Thanks Gents.
Howard, this bearded throws about the same as a standard sized head but this one just has a small beard. The last one I done was huge and it was kind of top heavy, sort of whipped around. I done one for a deer hunter at realjob and he loves it. Chokes up on the handle to skin and has the weight to chop bones. This one is for a guide in mtns. so I can't abuse it to much with my "unique" throwing style.....Randy

Randy great start on the hawk. Little more finishing touches and it wil be a great piece as usual. KT

I love the shape for skinning. I wonder how the metal would hold up on elk bones? Elk bones are extremely hard and cause many axes or hatchets edges to spald or chip. I love multifunctional pieces of gear. Are you going to show us the sheath when you get it finished?

Howard

Thanks to all for the kind words. Maybe I'll get to the cover and finish it up soon. I love making hawks, it is addictive .
Howard, I chopped rebar in half with one of the old plow iron hawks, just....because I could . Destroyed the edge but a little filing cleaned it up. I like the cutting edge a little softer on a hawk than a knife. A hard rock off the ground will clean up the edge. I'm not easy on them. If a rock gets in the way of cutting a vine you can touch up the edge without pulling out the sharpening stones .A fine file works good......Randy

So? for multi function, will it throw a spark off the old file teeth from some flint? ready to light a fire.

Man that's a beauty of functionality! Love the flaring at the end of the handle for sure grip, and that beard good for hooking for sure. Well done.

Yes, I love the carving on the handle as well; I looks like it was improvised out in the woods somewhere.

Awsome work Randy.

Thanks guys

I love the carving on the handle as well
Playing with a kiridashi Brother Ed, you started this Tribal scratching stuff, now it's getting on everything.......

PullRich, it is the way the wood split, I just cleaned it up with a drawfile. I've yet to have a store-bought handle. One of the guys asked where he could purchase a replacement handle, I told him it was as close as the fire-wood pile...
