I´m in love with the wrong knife

I´ve got a very nice BM Mini Grip 556 with 154 CM and the mighty Axis lock. I´ve also own a NRA Mini Grip with S30V, black coated and so sharp I´m almost afraid to use it. My BM 707 is a lovely, wellmade knife. I´ve got the mighty 710 with D2 and steel, Axis lock and that is my altime favourite knife whatsoever. I´ts the perfect folder.... but.... Why do my cheap chinese-made (crap steel) Benchmade Vex get all my pocket time? That cheap bastard is the one I choose when it´s time to leave home. And the Vex delivers every day, cuts and slices everything that I throw at it. I´ve cut strings, packages, clam shells, rope, branches, cardboard boxes, fruit and lots of other things. And if it gets dull, five minutes at the Sharpmaker and it´s back to scary sharp. I think I´m in love with the wrong knife. Are you?

I can feel ya, my EDC is a Persistence, the cheapest knife out of all my Spyderco 30+ collection. It's weird I tend the use it more than a Caly3 ZDP, Para D2, Sage 1/2, go figure

Well, I am no one to talk. In my left desk drawer lives a half dozen Millies and four of those are Carbon Fiber. In my right hand pocket lies a 4" PE Voyager. Go figure.

I have the problem of always falling love with The Next Knife. My wallet can only hope that one day I'll settle down The One.

I used to have this problem to. Expensive knives, and i was using my tenacious all the time
Then one day when i got my large sebenza...i just used it and started to EDC it... and now i dont care if it is scratched up etc...
Just take the step of using it... Becaus that is why those knives are made

So why don't you use the other knives that it sounds like you like more? Because you are worried about using them and the knives showing marks? Those really aren't that expensive of knives and are easily replaceable, although they are really nice.

I am to the point where I use the knife because what is the point of owning it if it is going to sit in a box? I have a bunch of knives that I need to get rid of because I couldn't handle them locally so I bought them and it looks like I have a knife store. I occasionally find a knife that speaks to me and I will add it to the rotation but it doesn't happen often. My M4 Rift is always in my pocket and I have a few others that also get carried and rotated through but there aren't many. If a knife isn't as good as the ones I use then I don't see the need to carry and settle for a lesser knife.

I plan on getting a few knives this year but I don't know if they will live in my pocket or in their box until I can sell them. I think the Lionsteel SR-1 is going to be one that goes into the rotation. Not sure about the G10/Ti/M4 Military as the military handle is really long and just doesn't seem that good for me. I have a feeling it might get sold off.

So basically all this rambling means use what you like. Find the best design for you and use it hard. That knife is good for you so enjoy the quality and design and materials and don't settle for a cheap knife just because you don't want to scratch your nice one. Now if you are doing something borderline abusive then have a beater to use also but otherwise buy and carry what you like.

I love my millie, it fits my hand really well and it is quite hair popping sharp, but somehow it's my endura that gets the pocket time.

it takes a while to gain an appreciation for the subtle differences between knives.

do this: take each knife and carry it exclusively for a week. dont even touch another knife during that time. at the end, carry which one you liked the best in actual use. maybe at the end you still like the vex the best, but again it takes a while to break a habit (which imo gets in the way of enjoying a lot of things).

to be fair once I got a sebenza and an SnG those put a different perspective on things and after that I really didnt want to carry cheaper knives anymore (though I would if I had to have something smaller, I dont like to spend up on small knives). that was instant, however before that it took a while to understand and enjoy my emersons over my entry level stuff.

Do yourself a favor and do what i did. When you buy a Sebenza, have a few cocktails that night (to ease the pain of doing it) and cut everything in sight with it. The next morning you will wake up to find a few marks on your new expensive knife. Then say to yourself that I will never get even close to what I paid for it due to a scratch or two. Voila. Your edc forever. ... or until ...

the first scratch is BY FAR the hardest one.

I just try and buy used. only problem with that is it can be hard to find what you want.

I dont have that problem because I dont fear using my more expensive blades. Just got a new emerson and I just tossed it in my pocket and have been using it for everything. I only enjoy the knives I used. If i dont use them, I dont enjoy them. Safe queens just feel hollow to me in some way. Dont have any of those anymore. I do have a couple of unused blades I do need to sell though.

I rotate through all of mine, although I do tend to have favorites that linger in the rotation a few more days. In order to keep me rotating through them, I have established some for special occasions.

For example, on Sunday I have only a few knives to choose from because if it should slip out of my pocket, I want it to be one that little fingers cannot open; thus, GEC and Queen soddies are for Sunday. Another class for me is all my one-hand openers; they get carried at home.

This keeps it fresh for me. I pick the knife for each occasion.

i too have this problem I have about 20 knives now not including my saks and i never edc'd any of them im way to worried to mess them up but yet i keep buying them... I think i need to break that someday by just using them and if it scratches or anything not sweat about it... they arent cheap knives in the least bit so they should last :) I only EDC my skyline or Twitch II I wont even edc my tenacious which was cheaper lol its too good looking to scratch

another thing that bugs the crap out of me is when the pocket clip gets all scratched up... is there a way to get over that???

of course, I want to use all my knives. it's why I bought them in the first place. it's just that my millie is a little too big for EDC for me. I do carry it when printing or when there's no hassle if you have a knife. If I ever get a strider or another one of those I would use them too and won't care(well, maybe a little) if I scratch it while sharpening. but maybe that's because I don't have one yet. I am getting a manix 2 that's gonna be a beater in my farm chores.

Yeah... really interesting. It's not because I'm afraid to mess it up, but my Sage 1 sits in a drawer while I carry and handle my Persistence constantly. Strange, but true. I like both knives, but the Persistence just seems to find it's way to being with me while the Sage 1 (better materials, better build, etc.) just sits. Hmmmmm.
