I’m getting the itch for a custom.

Hello BF, I am wanting to try something new in my knife hobby. I have never ever owned a custom knife before. For the most part, they are a little pricey, but it comes with the territory. I’m not very familiar most custom knife makers other than ones I stumbled on in posts on BF or ones tied in with production manufacturers.
I plan on buying one within the next month or two, and would like to keep the cost around 350 dollars if possible. I prefer a mid-sized folder but they generally run higher in cost. So I will probably go with a 3.5-4 inch medium sized fixed blade suitable for edc.
I want something with a carbon steel blade such as A2 or 01. I checked out Dozier and Phil Wilson’s website but they are backed up on orders. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have this coming from @Darrin Sanders some time next week. He's a maker here on the forums. You might check with him. Mine's in m390, but I'm sure he could get ahold of some A2.

Thank you!!! I actually think I have heard him mentioned on here in the past. Your pic didn’t open for some reason but Darrin posted a pic of it. It looks like he does beautiful work, how is the f&f on yours.

Have you looked at the knife makers market in the for sale section? I imagine you have, but that'd be the first place I'd look. If you see a style that catches your attention just send the maker a message of some sort and I'm sure they'd be willing to work with you(or you could buy the one that caught your attention).

I know I have a mental list of who and what I'd like to get done for myself whenever I get the chance. Loads of talent on this forum.

Unfortunately, the maker of my customs is not BF connected so I cannot recommend him. :( However, I suggest you decide what you mean by "custom". Some mean a knife made "one off" by a maker; to me it is one made to my specifications/design. If you go that route, I believe you should first sit down and start drawing (no need for artwork here ;)) different designs you think you would like and, when you have gotten to what you want, make sure you send a drawing, with specs, to the maker you pick. By the way, I had all of mine done in O1. Good luck.

Thanks, for the suggestion. Since this is new territory for me, I’m hoping I can get some recommendations and reviews of different makers before contacting someone. I don’t want to contact one knife maker, then end up going with someone else and leave the previous makers wondering what went wrong.

I understand, rules are rules. If it’s one I like, I would buy one that was already made which was my original plan. It would be ultra cool to have one truly custom made though. How do you like 01?

I don't think that's an issue. Makers and dealers are different. We cant discuss sales from dealers that don't support the forum, but we can ramble ad nauseam about ZT and Kershaw who aren't forum supporters. I don't know why talking about a custom maker would be any different.

Figure out what you want; price, size, shape, materials, aesthetics, ergonomics, etc. Odds are that someone makes that knife or has made that knife. Odds are that it will come up for sale on this forum in the knife exchange. May take some time and you got to be persistent in checking customs for sale section in the knife exchange and most importantly, you have got to be ready when it comes up for sale and pounce.

Also, there are custom knife resellers that have a wide variety of customs that are continually updated. You can set up an account so that they tell you when one of your favorite makers knives comes up for sale. This has assisted me in getting the exact knife I wanted from a maker that I have been on his books for a long time.

The only custom folder I have is one made by TA Davison, a slippie and it ran me about $500. He uses CPM 154 mostly. Good steel. Easy to sharpen.

One option is to attend a large knife show. You may just end up ordering one from the maker. There are also re-sellers at knife shows that include handmade folders.
