I already made my choice, but what do you think?

Got that itch, and decided to buy myself another small folder. Question was: Dragonfly or Navigator? I've wanted a Dragonfly, but Marion David Poff was pretty convincing singing the praises of the Navigator.

When all was said and done, I found a great price on the Navigator and ordered one (plain edge). Can't wait for it to arrive.

Now, I know that there are plenty of you out there who own both. My question is, in retrospect, if you had only been allowed to buy one of the two, which would it have been?

I was originally having to decide between the Pegasus and the Navigator but ended up getting a SS Dragonfly cause the first 2 were being discontinued and I couldn't find them in my usual stores. I still wish I could go back to that decision and dig around for a place with the Navigator. I think it has a very nice handle shape. I really like that "pinky shelf" a lot. As for my current SS Fly, it's pretty nice and suits my needs. But if there was a Pegasus, Navigator and SS Fly in front of me and you told me to pick one, I'd take the Navigator. Good choice dsvirsky.

To make you second guess your decision a little more though, Spyderco was planning to release a Blue Almite Navigator. This is a beauty. Take a look:

Very nice.

Actually, I knew about the blue Almite version when I made my choice -- saw it over at the Chai Cutlery website. Wanted the G10 scales of the Navigator.

Oops. Duplicate post.

dsvirsky,
You took the G-10 over the Blue Almite? Hmmmm, how strange. There's actually another one I've seen. It's also from James Mattis and his scans and I think it's a Blue Almite Navigator but the handles have a group of slots in them. Very cool. I'll try to dig that post up if I can find it.

dsvirsky, you made the right choice. I have the navigator in g-10. Its a great knife. I have had and sold Dragonflys. I recently bought a Dragonfly for a gift because I could get it engraved. I much prefir the ergonomics of the navigator. It feels kind of like the Calypso Jr. in use.

The blue Almite is pretty, but I figured the G10 to be more functional. Besides, there’s already one knife in my accumulation (it really doesn’t deserve to be called a collection) with Almite scales (the Almite Walker), but nothing in G10.

All this talk about Almite.

OK, I'll bite ... what is Almite?

It looks like a coating on metal, and I can't find it in my Spyderco brochure (maybe out of date?)

Longen --
Almite is anodized aluminum. I believe the Toad also has Almite scales.

Thanks Dave.

I wonder if that's a Spyderco trademarked coating, and if it's anything special chemically.

Anodized aluminum sounds pretty generic otherwise.

Almite is not exclusive to Spyderco. Chemically, it's Aluminum Oxide. Here's more info than you'd ever want to know http://www.peachnet.edu/rtk/msds/MSDS1066.TXT

Is almite just the name of the outer layer once a piece is anodized... or is there a difference I'm not aware of?

Anodization is the process... Almite is the resulting coating?

I have an Almite Walker and as far as I can see its just an anodized aluminum handle. The coating seems more robust though then say the Microtech or on the Koncept which I also have.

Dragonfly vs. Navigator?
My first Spyderco was a Dragonfly. Love it. Now I guess I'll have to look at the Navigator. This forum has a powerful effect on my interests. Just bought a Military and ordered a Starmate. A month ago I didn't own a single Spyderco knife. What is happening to me?

Hmmmm... I would have bought another Pegasus. Only because I have one, and really want another.
