I promised my wife that I would not purchase anymore knives unless I sold one first, and that my folder collection was limited to ten (not including my "dress knife" Lionsteel Opera. Well, Friday I ordered a Southern Grind Spider Monkey. I have a drawer full of old knives and knives in disrepair. In the move Saturday, I found the missing pivot screw to my CS Recon 1. So now I have two new knives. She doesn't know about either, and I'm hoping to keep it that way.

The monkey came yesterday.

Great ergonomics, I love S35vn, I really like the way the carbon fiber scales are done--It starts out very scalloped at the rear and gets smoother as you get closer to the blade. Only thing that bothers me is that the pivot is over tightened and my torx drivers are in a box somewhere in the new house.

Pictures to follow.

We just got some of those in last week and I was very impressed with all of their knives. They have great attention to detail, nice fit and finish, and nice packaging.

As for the wife, I know what you mean. Mine wonders why I would need another knife, to her they are all the same so I really should only need one or two.

I guess I should clarify as I've been married for only one month...and I'm already breaking promises.

I'm gonna pick up a second torx set and see how the knife is after loosening the pivot.

I think the general rule is - If you've had a knife longer than you've had the wife the knife comes first.

Also- Never let the wife come between you and a knife.

After all, in many cases a knife will last far longer and give you many more years of enjoyment than a marriage.

I hope the two of you will be very happy together (I'm talking about you and the Spider Monkey).

Good luck with the wife as well.

:D

Though I am not married, my girlfriend and I are very serious we have been together a year now and do plan to one day marry her, she is the same way when it comes to my hobbies...guns and knives. She views them strictly as weapons whereas to me they are tools that each perform strictly different jobs and I'm just such a nerd with all of it from the cleaning and sharpening. I like the fact that we share so many similar interests but the fact that I can have my own "manly" hobbies apart from her is pretty cool.

I ended up buying some new torx drivers on my lunch break, and loosening the pivot just a little bit makes the spider monkey fly open. Its great. Definitely a keeper. Fit and finish is really great.

Pics of the new knife with the repaired one:

I often find myself paying more for a knife in a store rather than online to save myself the explanation of why I need yet another knife..The only exception is if I cant find something locally, then I try timing it to where I'm checking the mail on delivery day...occasionally it doesn't work out thou and some fast talking is required.

Besides it's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Before I make a large knife or gun purchase I always buy my wife something first near the same cost. When I bought my 1911 I got her a diamond and white gold ring. When I brought the gun home she started to say something and I just held my hand up and pointed to the finger she wears the ring on. Works every time to the point where when I buy her something outside of a holiday she asks "what did you buy now?".

Luckily, she works 3-11 so she's gone from the house when ups and usps etc comes.

Also, in loosening the pivot slightly, the blade is now off center. Doesn't bother me, but I may order the "proprietary" body screws tool.

LOL. I know a guy who does the same thing. He calls it "Paying the wife tax". :D

Yea it sucks paying more but $20 to avoid any possible turmoil is worth it...sometimes thou the online price is much cheaper and I roll the dice for beating her to the mail box. When I got my tops bob it was $175 locally and online it was $112. If I can buy another knife almost for the difference in price I go with the online order.

Technically the CS Recon 1 isn't new though, right? You already had it, no money spent... win win :D

Correct, but she didn't know I owned it as its been sitting in my night stand drawer.

Glad I don't have a wife. I dislike asking for approval to anyone, whether it's making changes to my retirement account, mortgage refinancing, building custom pole barn, dropping 5K for truck lift kit and tires/wheels or just purchasing guns, knives and ammo fort.:D

First, I think it's more horrible that you made such a promise knowing you probably couldn't keep it, rather then the fact that you broke it. (Being a knife nut and all)

I don't think it makes you a "horrible" person, just one of questionable integrity ;)
J/K

It's all in the semantics though; When I told my wife (we're not legally married, but have known each other 15+ years, been together for going on 6, and have a beautiful 2.5 year old son and home together so...) that I would hold back and not buy any "new" Knives for a while, I have since bought 2 used ones, a new axe, 5 vintage straight razors, a new strop, and a new (razor dedicated) water stone/hone, and am seriously considering a new Tram (since a "machete" isn't really a "knife" is it?)... :D

Also it helps I work 3rd shift, and she works 1st, so I can always get to the mailbox before her... One of these days though I'll get a Saturday package, and I'll have some explaining to do for sure, but as semantics go, I did keep my word... She can be mad, but she can't call me a liar...

Why put artificial and arbitrary limits on yourself? If you can afford them, then get what you want. Of course, funding can be a real limitation, but other than that (and maybe the space to put them all), I say rock on, brother! Just be sure to buy your gal a purse or perfume or a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant every now and then, and she should be good with it. Works for me!

Get your wife something. Though its a dead giveaway it will show that you aint just thinking about yourself.
