Greetings everyone. This is my first time posting and I have a question about a spyderco native. I have searched but I can't find just what I am looking for. I want to know what is the difference from the S30V and the VG-10. Is is worth the $10 more. I have a Navigator, and I know how well an edge stays and how sharp it can get. But how sharp is the S30V and how easy is it to sharpen it.

Any help is apreciated, and thanks in advance.

Mike

S30V can take an immensely sharp edge and hold it for a really long time. It also is easy to sharpen with a Sharpmaker. My Native has S30V steel and was hair-popping sharp out of the box. On the other hand, so was my VG-10 Delica. S30V is easier to reprofile than VG-10 (in my limited experience), but both bring up a really sharp edge. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice, so let either the handle shape or the money steer your decision.

Mike T,
Welcome to the Bladeforums!!! :)
I would suggest trying EBAY for the Navigator you are looking for. Hope this helps. You could also try www.1sks.com .

Maybe I can help you out buddy. The two Natives that you are looking at are two different knives. The Origional Native (S30V) and the Native III (VG-10).

The differences:

1. Steel: As posted above they have different steels. CPMS30V is the new wonder steel on the block. It is more corrosion resistant than VG-10 and has greater edge holding. S30V is also easier to reprofile the edge on than VG-10. That said, VG-10 is still an amazing steel. Deffinatly in the top 3 steels in my oppinion.

2. Handle: The Origional Native's handle is thinner and has a classic styled clip on it. The Native III has a thicker handle with a wire clip. The handle size is a matter of personal preferance, some like it thicker, and some, like myself, like it thinner. (Doesn't get in your way of reaching into your pockets as much) The clip is another matter of debate. I have not used a knife with a wire clip, but many here have and the concensus seems to be about 50/50. Some like it for the lower visibility, some dislike it becuase it clips to tight to the pants.

3. Blade Shape: They are slightly different. The Native III has a smoother looking swedge than the Origional and it has a different pattern on the spine for thumb gripping.

Those are the differences. I own the Origional Native with S30V. The steel is absolutely fabulous. Holds an amazing edge. From the little use that I give it I have yet to take the Factory razor sharp edge off of it. I would prefer this model over the newer one for 3 reasons. First is the thinner handle. Seconed is the classic clip. Third is the slightly better Steel.

Hope I helped.

mike ... I just got done looking at the old and new natives
I was at Spydercos store in Golden today.
Personally, I like the new native. The handle is not "that" much thicker.. but is has a small swell in it, Which really makes it a comfortable knife. I played around with it for awhile and it just "felt better"
As far as steel, I like VG-10 BUT there is nothing wrong with S30V
If you were talking about 440A compared to either of these steels then You could see a BIG differance. REAl big differance...BUT for all the use most of us give our knives... ( NORMAL USE) ...both steels are equal.
If you where using the knife on a salt water boat every day then I would look at the corosion factor.
If you were camping and doing survial stuff then I might look at ease of sharpening out in the field.
To me what is important is how does it feel in your hand in your pocket etc
BY THE way... The wire clip is cool. Its differant I admit BUT it slippped into my pant pocket easy and I couldnt shake it off.
And I didnt feel it in my hand when I was playing around with the knife...
Anyway whatever you get Enjoy
