After using my DMT magna-guide kit on some cheap knives, I spent some time on my Spyderco endura today. Working down from the coarse to the EE fine using KNIFENUT's advice on getting more and more gentle with each stone.

After that I used a homemade strop with some compound from Lowes.

Anyway, the point is that I was able to split a strand of hair I had already shaved off my arm. First time that I have done that. This bad boy is sharp and now I won't want to use it tomorrow.

One question: What is "tree topping"?

I reprofiled my new ZT 0301 with my magna guide today, x-coarse to xx-fine. Quite a job - makes me long for those DMT 8 x 3 " continuous benchstones. Can't wait to strop it tomorrow! I'll be using 2, 1 and .5 micron HA paste & diamond spray. All I hope to accomplish is getting the scratch marks off the edge and I'll be ecstatic! :D

Good report r.lynn

What angle are you profiling at? My Aligner can't go low unless I bend the rods, and my edge bevels are always frustratingly thick.

I don't pay attention to the instructions for angle settings since there's so much difference for blade width and where you place the clamp on the blade.

I have a magna guide not an aligner, but it was set somewhere around the middle notch. What was important to me is that it removed steel and gave me a wider scratch line. It took a LONG time to get sharp and although the ZT 0301 is very thick, what makes it so, is that the two sides finally intersected precisely, giving a very sharp edge.

I'll be stropping it this afternoon and hopefully geting rid of the stone scratches. I'll post back after I check the exact setting on the clamp and let you know.

Good deal! You can use it without worries though, since you can get it sharp!

I don't know the level # but mine has two empty notches above the clamp and the adjusting rod is sunk into the 3rd notch. So it's set at the 3rd notch under the square that the rod slides through. :)
