I have been eying the Volpe for some time, now. It has seemed a nice sort of dress knife for when I want something a bit larger than a Kiwi, so I took a member up on his offer of one. I hope that it is as nice as it appears to be in pictures. If not, others will have a crack at it.:)

Hope you like it Hugh. Not my cup of tea, but it is very well made, exceptionally well finished, and has a glassy smooth action.

I received it yesterday and I am quite pleased with it. It's a definite keeper. In playing with it last night, I quickly figured out that the odd dip in front of the Spyderhole is for your index finger when you need to use it for extra control of the blade.

After more playing with it, I can now see why some dislike it, although I like it a lot. The knife is strictly right handed, as the frame-lock is on the left side and is worked best by the right hand and the clip is mounted for right side, tip down carry, not a favorite with many. I happen to prefer those options, so I am happy.

The knife has all of its edges nicely rounded, not beveled but rounded. This makes for a very comfortable grip on the scales but it makes the inner edge of the frame lock a bit harder to obtain purchase upon, so it is not an easy one-hand closere. On the other hand, I swear that the Spyderhole has had some minor rounding of the edges so that it is slightly less aggressive toward the ball of your thumb.

I have not tried any real cutting with the blade, but the index point for your index finger forward of the Spyderhole strikes me as a good idea and I like it. My only improvement would be to have some traction grooves cut into it.

I notice that my new Volpe is not as hair-popping sharp as most Spydies come "out of the box." So, I wonder if any of you can give me advice on what angles to use on my Spyderco 804.

Hi Fuller. Wow kinda weird to see a link to a thread I started and only dimly remember. I'm still waiting for my collector club Volpe, maybe then I can join you in the Volpe Fan Club.

The only prob. I have with the Volpe as a dress knife is the weight. It's not a lightweight. I carry it for afterwork non-beater duty, which is most of the time when I'm not at work. It is very, very sweet.
