I really suck at making leather sheaths.:barf: today I give up I am done with leatherworking. From now on it's wood or NS. If the blade calls for leather it's gettin sent out. The only problem is I don't know who to send em too.

You can also try Sunrise River Custom Knives -- Jay from there makes beautiful sheaths. Or, for the ultimate, you can the grand ol' man of sheathmaking Sandy Morrissey do them for you.

I'd start by checking to see who is doing good work locally, look in the phone book. While there probably isn't a listing for sheath makers a lot of saddle makers, holster makers, etc. take on smaller projects like sheaths to help keep busy, you can also check with local hobby supply places they may be able to point you to someone doing leather work. There are a lot of people out there doing good work, but it saves a lot of potential hassles to have someone local that you can get to know them and see their work. It saves a lot of time to be able to walk in with the knife and talk face to face, make a sketch, pick hardware, color, etc. rather than playing phone tag, e-mailing back and forth and faxing. Not to mention the shipping problems that can pop up. Not to discourage you from lifter4Him, Sandy Morrissey, or any of the others, but I've found (from both sides of the fence) that it is often less hassle and just as good a product to stay local if you can.

Check with your local shoe repair shop. You will make a new friend and get sheaths made, too. I had a local shoe/saddle repair shop do some of my sheaths in between my regular custom sheath maker here in my area of SE Iowa.

My wife, Tess, makes all my sheaths and sheaths for a few other makers. You can give her stuff a look on our web site, give her a call or just get a brochure.

Thanks Gib.
Belstain yes tools are essential. If you are not TOTALLY burned out on the idea of doing your own leather sheaths I have written some tutorials that might help.(several folks have emailed me that they have been a big help so I must have done something right)

Leather Stitching

Mexican Loop style sheath (Although showing a Mexican loop style the basic procedures are there for any style)

Now strange as it may seem (I am a fulltime custom leather smith, and my stuff is mostly high end Old West repros, but if you are interested....;))I am going to recommend several of the above mentioned makers including my good friend Sandy Morrisey (the Godfather of Sheath Makers :D), Dwayne Puckett(aka leatherman), and Tess as being top class leather smiths (I don't know some of the others but there work looks great so, no direspect intended). In fact I'd like to invite all of you to check out many of these fine folks work all in one place at the CKD Forums Sheath Gallery I'm a moderator for the forum and am justly proud of the examples of fine leathercraft displayed there. (BTW J you need to get more of Tess's work displayed on there, she does such a nice job!)

All in all though you might check out those tutorials, get a few of the proper tools and give it another shot. You might even like it!!!
