What is a good source to learn about fittings and the handle constructions....guards, bolsters, ect.....

The book "How To Make Knives" by Richard W. Barney, and Robert W. Loveless shows at least three ways to make a handle.
There are several other ways shown in tutorials on the various cutlery forums, and makers websites.
