Hi all.
I'm looking for a bag, backpack or shoulder bag, doesnt matter. I would like something not so 'tactical'. It needs to be carry-on size for flying, but large enough and tough enough for school books. It also needs to be comfortable enough to carry all day with a sizeable load in it.
Filson has got some good looking bags, and I am looking to spend some money, but not that much.Blackhawk makes some bad ass packs, but like I said, something not so tactical.
I know its a lot to ask,but I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
mo.

Check out Timbuk2 bicycle messenger bags. Many sizes, custom colors, and a ton of options. Choice of Cordura or waxed cotton, built like a tank.

I was just about to say the same thing.. I just got a medium size messenger bag yesterday night, I haven't had time to truck it around and test it out fully, but my initial impression is: NICE!!! VERY well constructed, they are hand sewn to your order so I guess you could compare it to a sebenza :) Lemme take some pictures and put them up later.

Yep, Timbuk2 is the way to go.

I've used a Dee Dog for about a year for all sorts of jobs and it's still going strong. I opted for the Hypalon liner, the bottom boot, and the divider to increase flexibility and I couldn't be happier.

I'm actually thinking of putting in an order for another VERY soon.

I ordered mine as a custom and still got it in about a week from the manufacturer.

Tmbuk2...I have the medium bag and think it's great. I only wish it had a few more inside pockets or dividers.

Here are some pictures I just took, it's hard to get good pictures of a floppy bag without someone holding it but I did my best... In the shot with 4 books inside there was still plenty more room, I probably could have stuffed 2 more in.
Mine is El Ocho size and I got the halpalon liner and reinforced bottom.

Sidewinder: I actually like the fact that it doesn't have too many pouches, it leaves all the space for the main compartment. I got a divider put in mine (in the above empty shot you can see it at the top of the picture) that separates some space at the back, plus it is two pieces of fabric held together with velcro so it actually divides the main compartment into three. The front side is lined with pouches as you can see in that picture as well.

The next size up from El Ocho is has SIGNIFICANTLY more volume, I can't imagine how much stuff you could cram in there :)

See that spacious interior :)

Hey you guys with the Timbuk2 bags!
Did you get the Cordura or waxed cotton version?
Advantages/disadvantages of either?
Thanks,
Lenny

I got waxed cotton and like it. On their site it says the nylon is more waterproof, but the hypalon liner seems totally completely waterproof so it's not a problem :)
I am just sick of nylon, it's rough and too shiny. The cotton feels nice, not like a cotton shirt or anything but you can tell it's not plastic like nylon :)

Here are some closeup images of the fabric:
Careful, these are HUGE images, I didn't scale them down since you'd lose some of the fine detail and if I cropped them you wouldn't have any frame of reference.

the best backpack I ever have owned...bar none...is my McHale CM Super SARK. I had mine made with 100% 1000D nylon and the beefiest 7/8" 7000 series aluminum frame material they had. http://www.mchalepacks.com/

Otherwise, I love the duffels made by Filson.

thanks for the help everyone!

cougar, that link is awesome. lots of valuable info for travelers in there.
