I'm looking for a *small* folding knife....

2" to 2.5"
Carbon steel, or preferably twist Damascus
Drop point
Fairly "traditional", possibly with mammoth or bone handle
(with engraving on the bolsters - or Damascus bolsters?).
Non locking (I want to be able to carry it legally here in the UK)
Relatively light

Something quite tasty!

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Rod

I have a few questions. Is the carbon steel a preference because of performance? And do you want the twist damascus because you like the pattern or for a different reason? And excuse me if this is a stupid question, but is a non-locking folder a slip-joint or something else?

i would contact bailey bradshaw

i have 2 of his knives

one a 2.75" with mastadon and damascus bolsters...even has a little damascus toothpick

the other is a 2.5" with stag scales

neither blade is damascus, but bailey forges beautiful damascus

Carbon steel is a preference because of performance. I just don't like stainless blades... and they don't "age" ;-)

Twist Damascus because I just love the pattern... and the uniqueness.

And in the UK, a knife that needs to have a "catch" pressed to fold it rather than just folded over under spring pressure is considered to be a "locking knife" (i.e. it might as well be a fixed blade) and is illegal to carry in public. (Yes I do have some).

So I want a small knife that I can carry in my pocket every day.

Cheers

try david winston as well - he posts quite often on the knives for sale by maker forum. he makes his own damascus and he likes working with bone...

Looks like you'll have to order one from somebody. The closest thing I found readily available was a Ruple in stainless damascus (ladder pattern).

Bill Ruple , Don Morrow, Eugene Shadley, and quite a few others all make nice slip joints. The first two I know have their own websites and post on the forums:

Blade lenghths vary and can depend on pattern - there are usually some available on the internet dealers sites, or you could go direct and get exactly what you want but with a longer leadtime of course.

Browing around Bill Ruple's site impressed me ;-)
Nothing exactly as the one I want.... but the features of several of them combined into my "dream" slip joint pocket knife would work for me.

And on top of that, Bill Ruple is a great guy, if you decide to order, I recommend him. There is a knife from him with stainless damascus ladder pattern right now on the Knife Network, but it is a little longer than you want, isn't carbon, and isn't twist. According to British law, does it have to be less than 3"?

Hi Larrin

Ladder pattern is not for me ;-)
I prefer twist damascus... or at least something more random.

... and yes, in the UK a knife must be less than 3" to be legal to carry in public, and not be "locking", so really, even my 2 7/8" backlock is out. But what I want is a small (around 2.25") slipjoint for every day carry use, and that won't weigh down my pocket too much.

Thanks for the recommendation about Bill Ruple. Following your post I have just written to him, with some pictures of the sort of features I like. I'm looking forwards to seeing his response ;-)

Regards
Rod
