Like many of us, this weekend I celebrated the 4th of July with the family. One of my young nephews seems to have been bitten by the knife bug, and I suggested that a good next step for him might be to read and learn more about knife history and lore. But, although I have an extensive knife library, I could not come up with a good single introductory reference recommendation for a youngster. There are a lot of good references on various areas of knife collecting, there are books and magazines on current knife trends, and plenty of random articles; but there are very few good books providing in a readable narrative a general introductions to knives and knife collecting. I guess what I was looking for was a good modern update on Petersen's A History of Knives. That was an excellent place to start in its day, but 60 years on it has become stale and even controversial. Perhaps what would work best would be a good series of videos on the subject. I thought that we could use this thread to start an index of links to informative knife videos starting with subjects like: the evolution of knives, types of knives, traditional folding knives, traditional hunting knives, machetes, the fixed bladed camp/survival knife, cutlery grade steels, the modern folder, knives for the kitchen, industrial knives, knife ethnographics, fighting knives and combatives, military knives, bayonets, knifemakers who made a difference, and etc.
I would suggest posting links under one of the individual topics listed above, so I can try to sort them on into a general index on this post. I think together we can come up with a very good introductory video library for the community.
