I am looking hard at an "Old Hickory" 6" blade sticker.

Yes, it's a real "Old Hickory" model known as a "sticker". It is pretty much a 6" spear-point 1095 blade brushed-gray steel knife. It's "Old Hickory" lineage is self-evident. The primary purpose for the knife will be both kitchen and field use. (General Utility). The price? MSRP is $13.50+ shipping costs. Would this be a prudent purchase, or should I spring for a more "kitchen friendly" profile?

This will probably see more kitchen than field use, but it can serve in a "dual role".

Oplinions?

A double edge sticker is a bit unusual for kitchen use or general utility. But want and need aren't always the same. At the price, there's not really much to think about if you want one. Old Hickory (Ontario) also makes inexpensive single edge kitchen and utility knives that might be worth a look.

Jake: Shipping puts the "sticker" at about $19.95. (MSRP direct from Ontario Knife Company). Yes, it's a bit of a stretch for the kitchen, but I figure that if I can find an inexpensive sheath, I can strap it to my left side (handle tilted forward) while I carry my next purchase (a James River Armory "Rock-Ola" M1 Carbine). across my back as I start walking the 3 miles to get out of town. I just want something besides my Kabar Mark 1 Deck Knife for general "woods tramping".

I figure that if I lose the "sticker" I wouldn't be out much. If I lose the Kabar, I'll be out my favorite hunting knife!

If you shop around you should be able to find it for less. A friend bought the butcher knife and reshaped it into a Kephart style knife with just a belt grinder. He also replaced the covers but it's not necessary . A Mora might be another option to consider.

The bevel is so broad on that that I think the knife must be chisel-edged. I'd be interested to hear if I'm right about that.

For kitchen and "general utility" use I would personally not want a double-edged knife. Clearly you want it, so go ahead and get it. I'm sure you could find uses for it, even if it's not ideal for the purpose. With just cursory shopping around I found that knife for $13.96 shipped.

In your deliberations, remember to add in the cost of a sheath which you would need to make or find something that would work for it.

Thanks for your assistance, John. I just ordered the knife for $13.96. (You saved me more than $5.00 and I appreciate that). I'll let everyone know how well this works out.

Again, thanks.

Just keep in mind that it really is a purpose-built knife typically used in processing game or livestock. It is a pig sticker, literally.

From some of the customer reviews of the knife on a big on-line retailer, you may have some sharpening work to get it where you want it.

Thanks, John. I expect to put some time with it on my Spyderco Tri-angle "Sharpmaker". If I can get this done properly it shouldn't be too difficult of a task. I figure it will be useful for cutting meat and small game in the field as well. I understand the knife's purpose. Since the "Old Hickory" line is relatively inexpensive, perhaps I can buy yet another slicing knife for use in the kitchen.

Works for me!

The "sticker" will be in coming either Monday or Tuesday next week. I'll be happy to answer questions about the knife upon it's arrival. If anyone wants a complete review, I'll be happy to write up a short one in the proper Forum section.

Glad you got the Old Hickory - most folks here own a surplus of knives. Got a question for you; If the Kabar is your favorite why not carry it? The issue scabbards hold the knife well, it shouldn't "fall out" when woods bumming. I like to carry and use my favorites when there is real work to be done. OH

I'll confess, I haven't been out hunting in a long time and the Mark 1 Deck Knife is still new. It's still an option, but it's still a "virgin". I have to walk 3-4 miles to the woods to go out. the lighter everything carries, the better. The "sticker" weighs next to nothing, and I'm almost afraid to take it out. (I know, I know, it's just a knife, but I paid nearly $60 for it and don't want to take chances the first time I go back out in the woods).

deltaboy: Do you use it for dressing game? Is it a chisel grind? How well does it work?

Perspiring minds want to know!

It arrived this morning and the edge will need a healthy amount of work. It's just big enough to get some work accomplished. It took but two days to ship from KP to get here. Amarillo, TX is a ways from my location.

We'll see.
