well i did it, waddled on down to the local farmers coop {just about the only place that carries a decent variety of case} and latched onto a full size sodbuster model 2138SS. Yeah i know it has the dreaded SS but dangit they didn't have a cv and I had to scratch that itch. got it home and opened it up and was very pleasently surprised to find 2 things i don't usually get in a case. #1 no lateral blade play, #2 the first case i've bought in a long time that was SHAVING SHARP, yes that's right i could cut myself and not even know it. I had forgotten just how good these things feel but I can see a problem right now. In the display they also had a sodbuster jr in both black and yellow. I can tell right now I'm gonna have to get one or both. this is really getting out of hand. well gotta go find something to cut. I'll let you know how the ss works out. later, ahgar

You have'nt even begun to relize the trouble you're in. Okay, now you have a Case sodbuster.

Theres still Eye brand, Boker, Queen, Robert Klaas....

oh man that ain't right.you've got to give me a couple of days to get used to the case before you throw a bone like that in from of me. I really like the look of the eye brand and I like the feel of the queen. don't have any experience with the other 2. the really funny thing is years ago I had, i guess, a Puma sodbuster. looked pretty much like a case as far as blade shape and had really pretty wood scales. and yes, I traded it away for a knife i don't remember which i don't still have. dang that seems to keep happening to me. later, ahgar

The sodbuster is a very old pattern that has it's roots back in the 1600's southrn Europe. It is basicly a modern rendition of the European "penny" knife, or simple folder. In France this style of knife was called a shepards knife.

With that one wide, thin blade, a sodbuster has the blade geometry to get scary sharp.

 Welcome to the fold, so to speak. Glad to hear the SS is working good for you. Other than the local hardware store everywhere else that carries Case only stock SS. My yellow handle Jr CV is the knife that rides in my pocket these days. If I'm feeling a little weak or feel like I'll be in situations where a one hand opener will be helpful I take or add in my Kershaw Ken Onion. But that Sodbuster Jr. has become my all day, everyday knife.

Jacknife is right though, you've unlocked a door that will be hard to close again. Soo many pretties...

As JK also pointed out, it's a pattern that has centuries behind it. Like the Moras, it's just hard to argue with a pattern that has been a mainstay for so long. Usually the only way that happens is when something works well. Also, those things seem to generally be pretty straightforward and simple in design and execution. I keep wondering what took me so long to take the plunge. (There's probably a pun in there.)

Enjoy!

All you guys talking about sodbusters! You are making me think I'm missing something knifely special! It might be the only knife pattern I've never carried, aside from a congress. But I don't need another knife!
Or do I??? HMMMM???

And then you branch out into variations. I have an Eye Brand sodbuster with a saw, and very nice stag scales. It makes a great camp knife. Combining a great blade, a very effective saw, and stag is a sure way to make a winner.

I bought the Eye-brand large yellow sodbuster about 15 years ago. Its been a fantasticly strong work knife. Very good carbon blade that is now a deep charcoal grey. Gets sharp enough to be scary, stays that way for a good amount of time.

Stag scales?

I'd like that!

so far I'm really liking the sodbuster and I've carried it everyday since purchase. my buck 889 is sulking in the knife drawer. yes waynorth repeat after me, "I need a sodbuster, i need a sodbuster, my life is worth nothing without one" but seriously if you've never had one you really ought to pick up one. even my wife who couldn't care less likes it. after exploring the case offerings i've got to get a queen and an eye brand. if this keeps up i'll need another job to support my knife habit. later, ahgar

I don't know if they're still around, but I've got one sodbuster made by Freidrich Herter and son, in Germany. It has what looks like some very nice rosewood scales, and get this- a lock on the blade.

I got this knife around 1968 or 9 can't recall exactly.

Well, I gotta do it, gotta try a sodbuster.
The Queen sodbuster A.K.A. "Country cousin", comes in D-2, which I understand is real good steel for sharpening, and holding an edge. I also like supporting the oldest knife factory in the U.S.of A. (even though I'm living over the Canadian border right now). Anyway, I think that will be my foray into Sodbusterismness! Now I just gotta see who's got one!?!

Now, that`s my one :) ! (And I get some more of them!;) )

That`s one of the old Robert Klaas (Kissing Cranes) with carbonsteel blade.

Today I got the info by Klaas Company that they were produced in the 1950`s.
Ordered a couple of them and will offer some for sale (when I received them)here on this forums, of course! ;) :D

Well, after reading through this most interesting thread again, I realized that I didn't understand the concept of sodbuster before, but I think I'm a little closer now! And DUH! lo and behold, not only did I realize I own one, but I carried it for a while! :o
Last summer, at the bi-annual Queen show, I picked up this reproduction Scagel one-blade for a pretty good price. Queen made them, a very limited amount for Dave Shirley's Custom Shoppe. I carried it around in my pocket for a while because it felt good (love handling that stag) but never used it much. Somewhere in my mind I thought it too valuable to use, and stuck it in a display case where I keep some nice looking old stuff.
I believe this knife fits the definition of a sodbuster, correct me if I'm wrong. Good old carbon steel, 1095 to be exact, so it's time to hone it up and use it! I can see the steel darkening, and the stag getting that nice used look!
Here's the before picture, Heh Heh!:D

Is it like this one?

Sorry for the photo quality, but you can see (just) that it is indeed a lockback. Blade length is 3 3/4". I enlarged the lanyard hole, which was originally only about 1/16".

I bought this about the same time you got yours, 1968-69. Cost IIRC was $4.00 and change CDN (let me tell you youngsters about the good old days...). According to the catalogue info at the time, the scales are cocobolo. Opening and closing is still smoother than most folders I have used. The Herders are, I think, at the high end for this style of knife.

Thats it exactly!

Its a very good cutting knife.

I do have a thing for simple european style knives. Opinels, Okapi, navajas...

you guys are killing me. the herder is very nice and waynorth you canadian devil that queen is awesome. however you still need to order another queen in d2 so you'll have it in case they quit makeing them. does that sound like a good argument?? i'm thinking of trying it out on my wife to explain why I need 326 sodbusters. it might work she's got like 200,000 pairs of, what look to me like, black shoes. anyway nice knives and great pics. later, ahgar

Well ahgar, I'd try that argument if I were you, preferrably with all those shoes in the background behind you!
I mean, what if I buy the second last D-2 sodbuster in the universe? Then what?? Besides, 326 sodbusters is a nice number, has a nice ring to it!
He who hesitates has lost!
By the way, I'm an American devil, married to a Canadian angel (I was gonna write devil, but she likes me to have lotsa knives!)!

With me I use the argument of jewlery. If she can have all those rings and bracelets, I can have all those pocket knives. She actually agrees. The one time she asked why I had three different knives on me with a forth on a keyring, I asked her why she had rings on both hands, bracelets on both wrists, and a necklace. She said "okay, fair enough".

Since then I think of pocket knives as mans pocket jewlery.
