Well, I am off to Eilsen AFB tomorrow for a few weeks. I thought it would be a great chance to see my aunt that lives in Fairbanks, but lo and behold she is in Arizona on VACATION!! go figure. It was kinda a spur of the moment deal, so I went for it before I called her. Oh well. Hopefully I can make some money to put towards machinery in the workshop. Last group cleared 700 bucks on top of regular pay for the same amount of time there. All I have to do is not drink. booze is so expensive up there, and we are not really gettin paid crap for our efforts.

For those of you that do not know, 9 hours in a KC135 nonstop sucks. On the brighter side of things when I get back I should have a package with HT'ed blades waiting for me.

A little different weather than McDill. It should be decent up around Fairbanks.
The flight sounds like pure hell. Suck it up Air Force!

Hook up with Dustin Golat while you're there. I did a month and a half ago. He's a great guy, newer to knifemaking, eager to learn, and shows some great talent.

Dustin is an inspiration to those newbies starting out. He uses a drill press, dremel and a coote grinder to make his knives as well as a few other tools. His fit and finish on full tang handles is already excellent.

Dustin's screen name here on the forums is BigJimSlade.

You'll enjoy your time with him, if you do hook up.

So once you get to Fairbanks, give Rowland and Kathy Quimby who own Nowak Ivory, a call set up to meet with them.....Kathy makes gorgeous mammoth ivory and jade/amesthist/blue stone jewelry. Rowland has some mighty pretty mammoth ivory slabs for knife handles......
And they are mighty fine folks as well.....

If you are in Fairbanks give them a call....

Also if you ar there on a Saturday, get to the "fair/ market"...and brouse...it is fun.......
And don't miss the Ulu shop....and the beautiful flowers in and around Fairbanks in the summer......
And the flower gardens near the university......

Enjoy....It is a beautiful State!!!!!

and.......if you have enough time, North Pole is just down the highway about 15 minutes. You can sit on Santa's lap like I did.

By the way, I asked for a KMG for Christmas. I'm also in training for Santa's job!

Ain't Mrs. Claus a hottie?

He was actually grateful to see me. I gave him tips on how to fatten up for the winter. He's been having trouble lately. He can't seem to keep the weight on. Poor fella. He's been trying to get fattened up on candy canes and hot chocolate. Pure sugar only lasts for a short time. I told him to stay off the yo-yo diet fads and start eating right. Steak and potatoes, lots of them. Bacon and eggs. Fresh bread. Beer! And I mentioned that he could spice them up with IG's HT relish..........

Poor guy will never be the same. It's a good thing the reindeer are in front of him, instead of behind him. But think of what will be all over the toys that are behind him in the big sack. Poor kids will be getting 'flaming poo covered toys' next year!

Alaska! Man, there's some interesting archeology going on there. I bet you'd love to spend your time crouched over in a hole brushing away dirt... :D Well, I sure would!

I hope you get a chance to meet Dustin Golat and the Quimby's at least.

Otherwise, enjoy your blades when you get home!

What a sucky trip. Twice as many aircraft as last time with half the personnel. We worked 12-14 hr days from day one until the last few days left in the exercise. Everything closes around 7, and the bar at one AM. I got to go small game hunting twice, saw a snowshoe the size of a smallish dog, quite amazing really. Of course I did not hit anything for the usual reasons, not my rifle, do not know the bullet drop, not sighted in for 100yd, rifle might not shoot straight. Man, I usually know how to overcome adversity even when it comes to ballistics but I could not hit the side of a barn from 100yd in to 20 feet. The moose are all over the place. When they block the road, you basically wait till they decide to move unless you want your vehicle jacked up. Oh well. at least the sun started to go down for about an hour each day towards the end.:grumpy:

But, on teh bright side, I got a package from Paul Bos waiting for me. I left a pair of handle blocks in teh vacuum chamber before I left, so I am quite positive they are saturated.:D Now I can get a knife or two in teh tumbler sometime this week and bring back the tumbled finish thread I started.
