I just read a post that Steve Jernigan posted on the Knifemakers Guild forum.

Mel Pardue's eldest daughter, Lisa, died today. From a thread by Terry Primos on CKD, she had been hospitalized most of last year with Crone's disease. I didn't realize it was that critical. I am saddened that I didn't call Mel last week.

As I find out more, I will post it.

Don't know Mel, but very sorry to hear this jsut the same. Prayers going out.

That is terrible news. I have talked with Mel a few times on the phone, in the past. Mel is a gentleman's gentleman, super guy.

That is very sad indeed.
I have chrone's...most of the time it just makes life very miserable but rarely it can be so bad complications from it can cause death.

It's very sobering and I am very sorry for the loss.

My heart goes out to the Pardue's. Crohn's is a terribly painful and debilitating diease that devastates families. The financial and emotional burden is huge!!

This is so very sad.................

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mel, Joe and the whole Pardue family at this time of loss.

Our sympathies goes out to the family. As Wolfman said, this is a terrible disease. We had a family member with it also.

This is very saddening. We were touched last week by the letter Terry Primos posted.

Our prayers go out to the family for God to give them strength in this time of tragedy....

:( My mother in-law has it to and for years now.
I didn't think it was that bad either??
I do know it has to be looked after closely.

I'm very sorry to hear that ..
My sympathies also go out to the family..

Dan, it runs in my family. Those that don't get sick like me seem to end up with Crohn's. It's part of a genetic defect in the immune system, an autoimmune disorder. My 16 year old nephew went through a three year bout where we didn't know quite which way it'd go. Fortunately, he only needed one major surgery, and it is controlled now by drugs and diet, with an occasional flare requiring a course of heavy steroids.

That said, in some folks, especially kids, it can turn into an absolute nightmare fight trying to battle the erosion of the intestines and the deformative fistulae which form in the digestive tract. Multiple surgeries, internal bleeding, peritonitis, the list of complications gets really scary. Doctors do everything that medical science can bring to bear and, like cancer, sometimes they just can't stop the progression. Read up on how bad the disease can get and it will scare the bejeezus out of a person.

While in many it is something that can be coped with and a semi-normal lifestyle result, in others it is a terrible ordeal that is a descending spiral of tragedy.

A group of makers and collectors are sending money to help defray the large medical costs the Pardue family has accumulated. For details, see Terry Primos' post on CKD:

I am also sorry to hear this Kit. I didn't know him but every time one of us passes on, another bit of this large family goes with him.

Gabe, thanks for the link. I will send something to help.
